Claims to hate lecturing, but does it really, really well. Not as good at leading discussions, imho. A tough grader, but gives good con crit, so your writing and analytical skills will genuinely improve. Very friendly and helpful.

I had Kaiser for 241, 242, and 342 - He is simply the best, brightest professor I've have at grinnell, and history isn't even my major.

I really enjoyed the Russian Revolution class. The prof. has high expectations, but you can meet these expectations if you do the reading and engage in class. He does not accept poor quality work, but if you write your best he will recognize it, unlike Prof. Strauber for example.

He teaches the toughest class you'll ever love. If I'm ever a professor, I'll mimic the method he uses (you'll see it within the first two class meetings) to get everyone to completely read his enourmous assignments. Intro Rus History was tough, but I learned a ton.

Great Prof. Classes are always interesting and fun. Difficult grader but not impossible. I knew nothing about Russian history before this class, but now I think Russian history is fascinating

Prof. Kaiser is a tough grader, but he will improve your writing and your ability to analyze sources. Kaiser is my favorite prof. b/c class lectures are stimulating, paper comments are constructive, and he's a goofy, lovable guy.

a stakhanovite who's nitpicky and incredibly unclear about his expectations. all i can say is, don't take one of his classes unless you're a history major.

I really did not like this class. It was incrediably repetitive. He is a really smart guy but this class just was not for me at all.

Kaiser is both very intelligent and very fun. I've heard he's not great outside of his field..i.e. in 105..but for Russian history--wow. I HIGHLY recommend taking a course with him. Besides Russian history is just cool.
