Comment:

For a writing memoir based seminar class it was a good class. 4 long papers the whole semester, no tests, but at least one reading and reading response due every class, takes about 20 mins for each one. Can rewrite 1 paper out of the 4 which helps grades. Reading responses are based on completion, many people skipped regularly. No textbook, novels

She assigns A LOT of reading and you need to upload responses on sakai, then discuss in class. But the discussions are always nice and she doesn't limit what we can say. Joan is supper approachable, but easy to instantly respect too. Her feedback is also super helpful, especially if you're actually a writer.

Joan is very friendly and approachable. You will get what you put into this class, so attending class, putting your effort into assignments, and submitting things on time is important. She is helpful in revising your work, in fact, part of your grade comes from rewriting and improving your material!

Joan tries to her best and is helpful. She is always in her office ready to revise your paper and offers extra office hours when deadlines approach so everyone can have a chance to talk to her. The class is boring, but most writing classes are. She assigns some interesting material to read and explains assignments well.

Joan is wonderful. I loved the way the class was set up (readings, writing, then workshop each other). At individual conferences, she gives a lot of great advice! She's a great teacher and an all-around enjoyable person.

I would definitely say that this is a good class and teacher. It is some work,but it is worth it. She does make you read almost everyday out of class but if you dont she wont call you out on it. And when you go for extra help she will run long but that is only because she really wants to help you.

Awesome teacher, very helpful. Class is very open to discussion and papers are very open to a wide array of topics. Also, we only wrote about 3 small papers the whole semester so it isn't a huge workload.

Speaking as a writer, I really like Joan. Her class feels very open. Lots of discussion. She doesn't have any discernible ego. Doesn't try to force you into a particular way of writing. Gives very helpful, specific feedback in conferences. Recommended.

fave prof/ fave class so far! Class time flew by. Great use of class time. Discussions were stimulating and people really got into them. Joan is very encouraging, very nice, and very helpful. She made me want to major in writing.

This class is so awesome. I only think you can take it as a major or by placement though. The readings were funny and entertaining. I looked forward to writing my essays. Joan was very helpful in revisions and was always available for conferences. Great teacher

Fantastic fantastic professor. This woman has an incredibly broad scope of knowledge in the writing field and is incredibly dedicated to exposing you to as many different forms out there as possible. Definitely not one to miss.
