Comment:
East Asian Buddhism is an extremely interesting topic for me, but if it wasn't I imagine this class would've been completely miserable. LOTS of reading, lectures are mandatory and boring. It's somewhat hard to know what she wants from exam papers; ask TONS of questions regarding what exactly she wants, otherwise you might get a nasty surprise.

she is a little old and at times it can be difficult to understand her, but she is a real person and if you go see her she can be very sympathetic and work with you. I highly suggest taking buddhism although she isnt the best, the readings are awesome (a lot of work though)

I'm telling you now, do not take her if you want to be interested AT ALL with what she's talking about. She makes you read long passages and then doesn't even clarify them in class. Her lecture consists of fragmented thoughts that never have a point because she can never finish a thought. If you need an IFC Non-western, take world music, not this!!

Lectures were clear and interesting. She hit important points from the readings. Maybe she took previous comments to heart, because for each exam, she took one lecture to more or less tell us what to write if we wanted to get an A.

As smart as she is, she cannot teach material well. Often she goes off on tangents or changes her mind in the middle of sentence. She refers back to readings and tells you to look at them again outside of class instead of expanding on these readings.

Very demanding class... it is really important to do all the readings. This is definitely not a class to sleep through. Yes, Dr. Carlitz is a tough grader, but she's really nice and helpful. You truly must earn an A in this class, but it can be done!

Comment:
Totally unhelpful. Lectures were boring and often caused me to eave early or do other work during the class time. She does not have an organized lecture and often begins to explain something and then goes off on meaningless tangents. Reading assignments were LONG and boring and she often relied on this material to teach the course for her.

Comment:
The grading of the papers was entirely too critical. I am usually an A paper writer and I found myself getting B's in this class. It was hard to put your finger on exactly what was expected from the papers, even when she laid it out in detail. Trying hard to follow guidelines and do exactly what she said to do in class only got me a B+.

Very helpful professor with interest in teaching a course well. Lectures were interesting, and she worked to keep some of the boring subject matter interesting. I would definitely recommend.
