Comment:
Prof Yandell is extremely knowledgeable about American Indian culture. She is aware that many of the cultural beliefs and concepts can seem very foreign to students and does an excellent job at explaining them. This course made me pursue a certificate in American Indian Studies. She really wanted her students to do well. Great course for AIS!

Kay may not be everyone's cup-of-tea professor, but I really really enjoyed her class. So much so that I'm taking another one by her. She really wants you to do well and there is no reason whatsoever that you shouldn't get an A or B in her classes. I really enjoy her lectures and find the material she teaches interesting.

Yes, the class was easy. Yes, the professor easily clarified the material read in class. However, she often proved to be offensive when it came to racial subjects and sexuality...which is problematic since it was a class on ethnic american women's literature. Additionally, there was rarely analysis of any material, only summary.

Take this class for your ethnic studies requirement. Kay really wants everyone to do well. If you attend lectures and do the reading this class is a breeze AND interesting. Your grade is all attendance/participation, two exams, and an essay.

She means well, but seems to teach at a freshman level only. In a class of mostly junior and senior English majors, I don't appreciate her stopping lecture to make sure we know what romanticism is (or allusions!). It feels like she teaches in a "no child left behind" style. I prefer a class where the prof challenges us with interesting stuff!

Love her! I would say a generally easy ethnic studies requirement as long as you read the books, which are surprisingly good. 2 exams (no final), one 4 page paper, and participation. She's super nice and we had good class discussions.

Kay is a fantastic professor. I've had her for multiple classes, including Intro to Modern American Lit and a post-colonial lit class. She's very concerned about her students. She will adjust the course load and assignments if she sees people are struggling. Yes, a lot of readings, but she makes excellent choices you won't regret. And she IS funny.

Easy class, but the books aren't that great. The tests are REALLY easy, you just have to know the meanings of words. The two papers aren't terrible either. She is a good lecturer and very nice, but it's not completely necessary to attend all lectures.

Professor Yandell is a boring, overly feminist professor who stands on stage rambling on and making terrible joke after terrible joke. She has yet to realize she is the only one who laughs at her jokes. I did not go to lecture for a whole month in a row, and did not read a single book and still am getting an AB, but the class was a waste.

Absolutely horrible. It is clear she would rather be a romantic literature teacher...we had to read ROMANTIC literature in a MODERN lit class. I took this class to aviod that crap. I hate this class, which is sad, because I am an English major and I love reading. Lectures are pointless and exams aren't based on lit. content, rather concepts.

Her lectures are pointless. She has skipped lecture twice and cut it short twice. Goes on for days about easy points in books we read yet ignores hard poems completely. I find the lectures to be a little dumb and not up to UW-Madison par.

Easy class. Do the reading and you will get a good grade. Lectures go over the reading, explain some things...usually not necessary since the books are not horribly difficult. There are always Sparknotes...

I guess she must be good at something but it's not teaching whatever it is. Make friends with three or four people in the lecture so you can rotate days and share eachothers notes, that way you won't have to sit through every single one of her RIDICULOUSLY stupid lectures. The TAs lecture better than she does by a LOOOOOONG shot.

she missed two classes, then she jumped back into the material where she left off. The next week she expected us to be caught up (500 pages!!). I am a caucasian male and I think she was condescending because of that, and also very pompous. Books were interesting, but she did not really lecture. Do not take the class if you are white male.

Kay is not "stupid". It is unfair to call anyone that let alone a Phd. With that said she can be unorganized at times and does have tendencies to lose the focus of the lecture. I appreciate the freer style of class and the open discussion that this class is focused around. The films she chooses are varied from terrible to likable.Easy ethnic credit

Prof. Yandell is stupid and I'm not sure why UW hired her. She teaches ethnic studies and considers herself a feminist but personally owns stock in Walmart. She is inarticulate, unorganized and uninspiring. I was excited to take this class before I took it and got her as a Professor.
