Extremely helpful if you ask questions in office hours. Projects were difficult at times, but generally pretty simple. Good at answering questions in emails. Exams were difficult, but allowed an open note cheat sheet, which if made correctly (as much information as possible) makes the exam fairly simple. Does not give much help on the curve.

Pretty decent professor. A little old-school but patient and thoughtful. He always brings printed notes for us so we don't have to print them and has a fairly length review for the exams. I'd take his class again and recommend them to a friend. Just be patient and attendance actually helps (unlike what some people say here.)

Not as bad as some people are saying. He spoon feeds the stuff to you with his lecture notes. Don't worry about missing lecture, you have his notes and he doesn't do anything but those. Exams are challenging and long. He is somewhat helpful if you go to his office hours. I don't know if I would take any higher level classes with him but OOSD is ok.

He's not as bad as his ratings here suggest. His lectures pretty much are his notes, but they are his own notes. You will probably learn things in his classes so he's not as terrible as is suggested.

Why does the university let someone like Slonneger chase students from the program by letting him teach (and I use that term loosely because there is no "teaching" involved) an introductory course?

Overall, not a bad prof. I would give him a 3.5 out of 5. Sure he pretty much reads his lecture notes in class, but going to class does help because he goes over examples and answers questions. If you are a serious student, then you shouldn't have any problems. His programming assignments could apply more to the real world. I would take him again.

Take your book (which is garbage) and his lecture notes to happy hour at Diamond Dave's, and read them while enjoying a beverage or two or six. Why? Going to lecture is POINTLESS. Note: His exams are the most horrid exams ever. There is no way to prepare yourself for the pain and agony.

the worst thing to happen to computer science at the University of Iowa. Useless, pointless lectures since all he does is read his notes posted on the web. Refuses to take time to help students, unbelieveable he is allowed to teach the two intro core CS classes. reason for low CS enrollment.

His "lectures" are poor and seem to be for moreso his own benefit (or to hear his own voice). He ill prepares the class for tests which are unfair because they focus on picky Java syntax. "Teaches" only how to Java program and not gene

There is no reason Slonneger should still be teaching. He reads his notes verbatim so there goes the need to go to class. His exams are worthless, having us define things that don't exist, and having us do things that the Java API says "DO NOT DO T

His lectures are pointless, read the book. His tests are stupid, w/ inane and often vague questions. This was my 2nd time taking the course (missed the final due to illness) So I know the material, but the 2nd time around I got lower scores on each test.

Do yourself a favor and don't go to class its pointless. Just read the book, its the same thing. I wasted 3 hours a week going to class for an entire semester, trust me you wont miss anything. Be prepared to be overwhelmed after the tests.

I learned quite a bit from this class, and thought he was very good. People just aren't good at being active learners during his lectures. If you want to do well, follow along attentively with his printed notes, jotting down LOTS of clarifications, mess

Gather around children and listen to Kenny read his word for word every day! This is a joke right? He is horrible. Unfortunately, CS students will have to meet up with him at some point, unless he gets fired. Learned very little from him, and you will

Not a professor, mind you, so he's an awful Lecturer (his title). Exams are awful and go over trivial java syntax, homework is often too easy. Dealing with him one-on-one makes you wonder why he's teaching to begin with.
