Would've liked more student discussion but lectures were interesting enough & used a good variety of reference materials. Very helpful prof, funny & smart, laid back class, good feedback on papers. I didn't read most of the materials but still got great grades. This class changes subjects each semester (sci fi, screwball) so I might take it again!

Poague is an awesome guy, as far as his class goes, well, different story. Weekly quizzes over material from the book that is sickeningly specific. Final is 50% of your grade and essay form. It is nearly impossible to take clear notes because the lecture is random garbling and his notes consist of keywords and pictures in various places on the board

Incomprehensible grading system. In his own words, he made it up as he was going along. His quizzes and papers were very difficult and attendance was required. I would recommend NOT taking this class.

This class ruled. I love hearing this guy's lectures, even if they're at 8 PM. One of my favorite ISU professors. He's a really tough grader, but you'll learn a lot about movies in his class. During tests, avoid the superfluous and you'll do well.

Really nice guy, and the movies were very interesting. When you write your papers, quote from the readings and the films, use what he says in class, add personal ideas, and you should do just fine. He does ramble a bit, and knows it. He said he's "paid a lot to do it", and often makes funny/corny jokes. Not an easy A (got A-) but fairly enjoyable.

This class starts off really really boring with the silent films but gets better as the semester continues. As far as Poague goes, great guy, fun to listen to (especially if you're a movie nerd) and is very helpful outside of class. Tests are in essay format but really easy. Professional b.s.-ers look no further: take this class.

His lectures have nothing to do with the exams. He rambles on about insane stuff that is very unrelated, mostly because no students do the reading to actually converse with him about the subject. Good guy but a lot of writing.

He's very odd, but very interesting. He rambles a lot without ever coming to a conclusion. Through all the rambling if you keep listening you can hear what he was trying to get at. I think the reason he rambles is because of his extensive knowledge of all that is film. He's a cool guy and expects quality work.

What a fantastic course. I wish all of them were this interesting. I wouldn't necessarily recommend it to people who know nothing about film but for those that do, it's great. Be prepared to write - tests are in essay format. He dips into philosophy now and again, lectures are very stimulating. It was great to learn about all of the movements.

Definately not for slackers...I've never met a professor who was so engaged in the material he was teaching (and the material that contradicts it) and was so passionate about film. I would recommend anything (film or not) that this guy teaches, cause he's awesome!!

Totally rambles and talks in circles--but is an awesome prof. Really emphasizes thinking and is a brilliant guy--only take his class if you enjoy philosophy and really thinking. His style is not for slackers.

Insanely intelligent, a joy to listen to (yes, even when he gets off the point.) He seems a little too stilted toward Freudian anaylsis, but that's a disagreement not a criticism. Excellent professor.

i thought this class would be interesting but only if you know A TON about film before going into it. he talks in circles the whole class- not one lecture was useful for any exam. exams were all essay and you had to study a lot to do well. silent films suck too! i took it pass/not pass and i passed!

He's a nice enough guy but he needs a better room. Nothing like not being able to read half the subtitles because some girl's Texas cheerleader hair was blocking half the screen. He also has a problem of getting off the point. It's entertaining, but tiring.

Poague never had a point, came back to it, or found it ever... Horrible lecturer. Out of touch with reality. WOuldn't leave a fan on in August when we were watching a silent film. Deviated from the syllabus, when the syllabus was clear enough to actually make a point at all... Had to drop this class

His knowledge of film is almost sickening, and that's awesome. He tends to ramble around a point for awhile sometimes before making his points known, otherwise, he's not a bad prof.
