I took this class as an elective because it sounded interesting and it was a lot more work than I was hoping for. Alot of papers with alot of reading. With that said, Newell does a great job of making it manageable and nothing is graded too harshly. She is also very helpful in her office hours

Prof. Newell is great! There is a lot of class discussion, and there is a movie at least once every two weeks. There is a lot of reading and a research paper though, but it is worth the work.

I really enjoyed this class. This may sound cliche but I really am not interested in history, I was required to take this class. This lady really knows her stuff. She barley references her notes and she can rattle off such specific and interesting details. Lots of required reading, but honestly, I barley read anything and passed with an A-.

Dr. Newell knows her American history very well in general. Unfortunately, her lectures may get boring after quite a while. The readings are too long, class participation is required, plus the extra credit is not much, but the grades were fair in general, depending on your GTA. Nevertheless, I would recommend her for a decent grade in history tho.

tons of readings expected for recitations, reading in textbooks, 2 other books during class, george washington biography and uncle tom's cabin for us, both hefty books, as well as a book she personally puts out composed of writings, not a tough class, just not enough time in the day for the readings

Very slow on returning grades. Not an easy grader either. Takes attendance and expects participation which is 20% of your grade. Wouldn't take a class with her again. She cares about history but isn't the nicest teacher.

she was a good lecturer, your grades come from your TA, so it depends on who you get. I got Robert Bennett, who I liked a lot...Newell is pretty good

Lectures tend to be boring and she always runs over, but exams are super easy. If you have recitation, GO!, the GTA's do not lecture more material they clear up everything from lecture and really prepare you for the exams. She is also super helpful in office hours, if you have questions she is more than happy to help you out!

talks a lot, allows you to speak, but will always find ways to discourage you with counter answers. seems to think shes always right never wrong.brings up good pts at times, but others..questionable. favors certain students that has the same mindset as hers or those who speak what she wants to hear.

She is one of the best History profs I had so far. History can be boring but she does a good job in making it interesting. There is 1 paper to write and for the mid term + final, you'll get the terms and questions that will be on both exams. The TA's were excellent too! Take her if you can!!!

The thing that irritated me with these class were the group presentations. Her lecture would run TOO long and then she would start doing something new at 12:15 when the class was suppose to be over at 12:18. You will NEVER get out on time!

lectures are terribly boring. Her notes in class mean absolutely nothing. There is no coherent or logical flow and order to her notes or what she is talking about. She skips from subject to subject, and half of the presentations in class she doesn't even tell you what they are. SHe speaks the whole time and doesn't stop tlaking. An awful lecturer.

Not a bad class. Midterm and Final were very easy. She pretty much gives you the test before hand and the test is based on ID's and Essay's.

She is very intelligent, and obviously knows what she is talking. Her enthusiasm about the subject encourages the students to want to learn the material. If you do the reading you will get a good grade. Recitations are important, don't miss them.

Her lectures can be boring at times, but you can tell she really enjoys history. She's pretty clear and articulate and always willing to help. The tests are pretty simple - IDs and an essay (or two). Not a difficult class if you go to class and occasionally do the reading.
