Professor Laurila is truly a CSULB gem. He is very smart and passionate about film. The material covered in class was very fun and interesting. The final is a BEAST but when it is all over, you will be thankful. This is how college should be! He challenges you to be your best. Quizzes every day, so don't skip the readings or miss class.

Great class. He's very precise about assignments--pay attention. Gives a quiz every session and there are a lot of journal entrees to do. There's method to his madness: in the end you'll know a lot more about film and close reading of texts. The films are all excellent. Not tough, but don't it lightly. You'll have to earn the grade.

He's probably the best professor I've ever had as a freshman. He seriously helped me in anyway he could, he was very caring to his students and his goal was to pass the entire class. He's very lenient in grading, an easy prof to satisfy as long ass you do your work and put your heart into it.

Awesome! Clear syllabus, great discussions, manageable amount of reading. Reading quiz each week and reading is from a collection of great short stories and a pretty interesting film textbook. A lot of writing assignments, but they're fun. I really did learn a lot. Kind of wish I could take this class again. He shows amazing movies, too.

One of the best professors I've had at CSULB. I'm not a huge reader or writer, which I thought would be harmful for my semester in this class, but all of the reading and writing for this class was very insightful. I learned more from this class than any other of my film classes and its not even in the film department!

This was my favourite class by far and that was probably down to Laurila's teaching. He is hilarious and so helpful. This class really helped me with my writing and introduced me to film studies. Such a fun class.

He is a fabulous teacher! He's got a great sense of humor and voice. Lectures are all relevant, and although the work is time-consuming, it makes you learn! Quizzes were sometimes hard, but he allows you to make them up the following class if you miss. He responds quickly to emails and wants you to succeed. Oh, and he's very easy on the eyes :)

It looks like the other reviews for ENGL 318i pretty much cover what goes on in class. As for Laurila himself, he is such a character! Sense of humor w/ admirable intellect, & his discussions are so thought-provoking. Great voice, too. The class was fun & the material is engaging. He really teaches you how to analyze films and fiction. TAKE HIM!

Seriously one of the best professors on campus, and one of the best classes you can take if you want to understand how to really craft a story. Love this class, and love this professor. Bonus: He's got a great voice. Not an easy class, but nothing feels like redundant or "busy" work.

My success in this course is a testament to how great he is. I went in with a basic understanding of film, came out with a strong grasp on the material. His assignments (daily quizzes on readings, 2 journal sets, film adaptation, final) force you to learn and understand the material. Don't try to bs him. Apply yourself and don't sell yourself short

Dr. Laurila is great; he's funny, charming, intelligent, and makes sure that his students are involved. Very fun class. He likes his students to speak up, so make sure you do. Also, you absolutely HAVE to read the textbook or you'll fail the quizzes. I used flashcards and it helped TREMENDOUSLY. Highly recommend him!!

A relaxed class. A few classes give you the option of not going at all and just watching the films at home (some are hard to find, though. And you'll have to make up the in-class quiz during office hours) . I got A's and B's on the assignments.. just pay close attention to the prompts and what he's looking for. Was a fun class .

Prof. Laurila is a thoroughly engaging wit and a phenomenal professor. He is just excellent fun. His classes are easy & worthwhile as long as you accomplish the required reading. GREAT professor. He really cares about his students & how they are progressing. a few REQUIRED office hour meetings. Attendance is a must, he finds your weaknesses in writing & helps you work through them. His favorite saying is "SO WHAT?!" so be prepared to fully explain yourself if he ever calls on you during class discussion. I LOVED his class!!
