Comment:
Mark Smith is a truly awful professor. He has no ability to remember anything and regularly tells students they will fail because they have not turned in any work, while holding papers from them with his HANDWRITTEN COMMENTS AND DATES on them from the CORRECT DUE DATE. If your paper doesn't start with a flashback, get prepared to write a flashback.

I don't know how I got so unlucky as to have Mark Smith as my professor. I don't think twice when I say he is the worst prof at NMU. As a student trying to do the work and simply get a grade is next to impossible because nothing is ever exactly how Mark wants it, acting as if it's his own paper. He is extremely self centered and is easily offended

Mark Smith is the absolute worst teacher at NMU. He has personally screamed in my face when I asked for help when being returned a paper with no grade. He has made multiple students in the class cry, including myself. I have never met a teacher that personal picks on certain students. He makes you feel victimized almost everytime you meet with him.

Mark is terrible. He constantly changes the schedule. He takes so long to give you grades back and doesn't try that hard when he is grading. He gets really confused when reading your papers and grades you bad for this. He gets way off topic in lectures. He literally brought in a children's book, read it to us, then explained all of the pictures.

Worst professor I've had at NMU. He's very inconsiderate and demeaning to students. No matter what you do for an essay or presentation, he will find something wrong with it. He gives very vague assignments with ridiculous expectations. He's very slow to return grades.

Nice until you get past the drop cut off date. Then turns out to be very difficult to please and is VERY demeaning. Made everyone in my class cry at least once except his pet. If you lie and say you are doing "Teach America" you'll get a good grade. Otherwise be prepared to do 6 re-writes, be called "stupid" and watch your grade point slide.

One of the worst instructors I have had. I was in my final semester as an English Writing undergrad and needed to fulfill a lit class. He uses NO critical thinking and if you try to display critical thought outside of the era your grade will suffer. I got better grades from skimming sparknotes than I did from actually engaging in the material.

HUGE workload. He loves to assign a lot of reading (in fact, we were assigned to read TWO books over spring break, which is beyond crap if you ask me) and many long essays. He also loves to hear himself talk. Constantly saying "Well, I think...." Has good intentions, but doesn't really follow through with them.

I had Dr. Smith as a graduate instructor. Nice guy, very inconsistent grader. I remember asking him in a conference what my grade was, he simply looked at the ceiling, thought for a minute and said "B+" with no evidence to show for it. He's unorganized and I didn't find his pedagogical approaches helpful at all

I don't know how people can write bad reviews for this guy. He has been by FAR my favorite professor since starting in '09. Helpful if you ask, not a difficult grader. Great discussions. I didn't read most of what he assigned and still passed with flying colors. There were a couple papers but you could basically write them on anything. I loved him.

Personally, I hated his class. I though we just did a lot of things to just take up time. Definitely my most boring class and would NOT recommend it to any one. Not what I thought the class would be like at all. Definitely different the the description.

Very nice professor. He expects you to read the material and be willing to discuss it in class, but the discussions are very interesting and fun. I loved this class, the material is really cool and Mr.Smith is one of the nicest professors ever. He lets you turn stuff in late and gives you extensions on your papers if you need them.

The worst teacher I have ever had. You do a lot of journal entries. You read "The Things They Carried". You write a draft every week. It gets a little old. He checks your drafts and you could potentially have to re-do your draft 6 times just to please him. At the beginning of the class he says you don't write to please him. He's full of it.

I'm a senior and this is easily the most useless college class I have taken. I understand that a survey course is difficult because you have to cover so much, but on more than one occasion, students have known more about the subject than he did. The good news? If you show up for half the classes and talk about your feelings, you'll get an A.

Just awful. His class is a waste of time. He is more interested in your "feelings" and interpretation of the works then the actual context.

This class requires a lot of reading, although I never opened the Harris book he required us to get. A lot of in class discussion is involved and some days you may feel like you talked about nothing at all. Focus is more on the Bible so take mythology if you want to learn about ancient Greece. He is a nice guy who is interested in the material.

Could he make things any more complicated? He's a really nice guy, but I hate how his class is set up. Lots of busy work, very disorganized, your syllabus changes every week, and it's all very confusing. I want to like his class, but it's hard. Being nice doesn't organize the inability to run a class smoothly.
