Comment:
Argument from one side: prepares students for MCAT, an "Amadeus," justly picks favorites. Another side: Napoleanic complex, abusive, a "Salieri," can't delegate, picks favorites. As an experimental science class, perhaps a way to resolve the debate is to have (impartial) tests of the teacher's abilities -- to see if he's as great as he says he is.

Comment:
The state distributes funding based upon the number of students enrolled past a given date. Once this deadline passes, many teachers learn to chase away students. It can reduce grading chores, enhance feelings of power, etc. Even for "A+" types, it's hard to support such behavior: It's unethical and a disgrace. There should be far better oversight.

Chemistry is a hard subject, no doubt. But Prof. McLendon takes Chemistry to a whole new level and makes it even more difficult. My suggestion to you BIO majors, stick with Abraams and make sure you get into that class. DO not take McLendon- General advice for everyone.

Prof. McClendon is a really good teacher if you use his intelligence the right way. He clearly has been teaching this class for too long and lecture is as boring as watching paint dry if the class doesn't get involved. Grades are fair, tests come straight from the homework. DO THE HOMEWORK; YOU WILL GET AN A

He lacks any talent as a teacher. He doesn't motivate students to do well or make chemistry fun, instead he makes you life terribly stressful. He is the reason that tenure should be eliminated, he doesn't care about students doing well and he honestly has no idea how to get the concepts across to students. He makes easy topics hard.

I agree with all the negative comments, his grading is ridiculous for lab! I know from campusbuddy history has shown that he gives out 20% A's to students that remain in the class(average of 10-12 at end of sem) so that's 2 A's out of 30 people that sign up for the class. You have less then 10% chance of getting an A and 70% chance you'll drop!

i basically got one thing wrong out of five on a lab and he took a lot of points off of it causing it to be a F and his grading style is very unfair and harsh! do not take him unless you are really desperate or have taken his class before! beware IVC students!

McLendon really knows his stuff -- I wish I took him for Chem 1A. His tests are a lot like the homework, and if you have any questions just go to his office hours or stay after lab -- he always takes the time to explain things (you just have to ask). I got an A (it wasn't the easiest A), but I'm definitely glad I took his class!

This is the worst teacher I have ever experienced!!! I already have a Bachelors degree so I have taken many classes. He will make you hate chem even if you previously loved it. His drop rates are 50%+ and you will end up with only about 6-12 students left at the end of the semester(starting # of students is about 30). He doesn't know how to teach!

even after studying for hours everyday... and redoing the homework. i feel like its all useless because the test asks completely different questions that he seems to neglect to thoroughly teach to the class.

This is by far one of the most horrible teachers I have ever had! Extremely hard grader! He knows a lot but he expects you to know as much as he does. He has straight up called my class dumb, stupid, mutes, and pretty much said he is freaking tired of us. So if you think your going to take him DON'T! Biggest mistake of ur life! Makes me hate school

Dr. McLendon certainly knows his stuff, but so does every other chem teacher here. He easily intimidates students and can easily confuse those who are new to the subject. Not a terrible teacher, but you are better off with Abrams, Fier, or anyone else. Strangely, he is very helpful outside of class and very punctual when returning papers.

This was the hardest class I've taken at Saddleback. I'm not an idiot, I know how to study, and I stuck with his class for 6 weeks thinking that it might get better. It didn't. He's not helpful in class and has no qualms about calling his students idiots. His tests are fair but his labs are ridiculous. Take Abrams.

Took over the summer, it was my life.. school 10+ hours mon-thurs, well that was after 2 weeks in. The man expects you to have gotten an A in CHEM 1A, and if you didn't he'll definately make you feel like you should have. If you're a chem major, take him, he knows his stuff. He's cooled down too over the years. Do not take if you are working 30+hrs

Hardest A I've ever worked for and the most rewarding. Unless you remember everything you hear in class, and you want a high grade, expect to put in a decent amount of studying time.

This class is very difficult, and not for the not dedicated student. McClendon is a straight jackass at times during class if no one can answer his questions, but his tests are exactly like homework and quizzes. Do you work and on time, if you dont understand, ASK! I got a B with minimal studying.
