My big issue with his class was that it was a visual arts/drawing 2-D course, with half of the assignments being 3-D; ex. making a 14 joint doll and creating the essence of a architectural design in a shoebox with objects. Little guidance with the assignments and in direct in answering questions. Fun guy, just difficult to understand in class.

waste of time. his self-involved, culturally ignorant, ENDLESS monologue was entertaining for five minutes. In a three hour class, we drew for twenty minutes and listened to him talk for the rest. Useless critiques, uninteresting assignments, doesn't grade based on stated criteria. Why does this man have a job, I have no idea.

You'll either hate Sam, or love him. Spends roughly half of each class bloviating on his life experiences, and trying to connect students in class. He's a very encouraging teacher and always asks the tough questions. Didn't learn much about drawing in his class, and projects were time consuming and uninteresting.

As said before, unless you already know how to draw or are interested only in an easy class, don't take Sam's. The majority of his classes are spent philosophizing and discussing where to find cheap bags of bell peppers. Lifedrawing sessions are virtually nonexistent and useless when they do happen. Sweet guy, not great for teaching actual skills.

I took him for drawing and he was useless. If you already know how to draw fairly well, I recommend this is the teacher for you because I learned NOTHING in his class except maybe lots about "existentialism".. apparently that's more important than teaching us how to draw. But, he's a pretty fair marker so if you want an easy class.. this is the guy

I honestly thought he was crazy for awhile..but kinda in a good way. At time I didn't like him but in the end I was not going to emily carr for design and he really helped me. I think if u are a drawer to begin with you shouldnt take his class first year but if you arent i would really recommend his class. It REALLY helped me in the end.

The best history theory course I have ever take. This is online, FULL of images, video and information. Live chat each week brought together students from Paris, Bangkok, Vancouver Island ,Alberta, and some ECI students. This course show the passion that Sam gives everything. What an experience@

For a drawing class he incorporates too many design elements. Sam, if I wanted to take a design course this class would have been great but give me a break. We only had 3 figure drawing classes and one was truly ridiculous. Also, he just talks WAY too much and I mean WAY too much. Don't take his drawing class!

Sam has so much information. He involves everyone. He talks and shows many Powerpoints. He has many professional connections that he shares with the students. He is very challenging and has had many experiences in art and design in Canada and other parts of the world. He is quite different than all the other instructors...very good

he's not passionate about teaching anymore, he does not want any work carried to home, he just wants to get his hours done and go home.. very disappointed at the fact that i actually paid to take his class.. he should just retire rather than telling class that he doesn't want anything to do with school once he clocks out.. that is just not healthy
