Comment:
While this is an incredibly difficult class, it is worth it if you care about the subject and put effort into the big papers. Dr. Comparato is incredibly funny and engaging in his class lectures, and he always has meaningful questions for students to answer. I would take another class with him.

Sporadic harsh-to-easy grader (sometimes mediocre work earns an A, sometimes hard work gets you a C). Always quick to respond to emails and gives good clarifications to questions.

I do not recommend taking this teachers classes. Ive taken several with this professor and the way he grades does not make sense at all. He doesnt provide clear guidelines for the way he grades assignments. I also did not enjoy his lectures and I had a very hard time paying attention even though I was very interested in the material.

I had Professor Comparato 6 times in undergrad for: POLS 333A, 333B, 334, 330, 434, and 435. I can honestly say that he is one of the best professors I have had (though I cannot complain about many). I am now in law school at SIU and Professor Comparato was a huge influence on my readiness and success now.

Tough grader, but fair. If you improve, he notices. If you discuss in class, be right, or do not talk; he can be seemingly tough if he thinks you should know the material. Buy the book(s) and download the PDFs he shares; you can easily pass with the information he gives the you. Use his rubrics and his syllabus. Read the readings and no problem.

This was on of the best classes I have ever taken. Comparato is extremely intelligent and is an expert on the subject. He is a very tough grader and assignments are long and take time (case briefs). However this class is designed to prepare students for law school and Comparato does exactly that. He is also very open and will discuss anything.

This was the hardest class I have ever taken,.Comparato designs his courses as a filtration system for Law School. If considering Law School then I recommend taking this course to see if you have what it takes. However If you're a typical undergrad who would rather party and take blow off classes then this is not the right professor.

He is a bad, unorganized prof (Dr). The assignments were not graded until 2 weeks prior to the end of the semester (which was 16 wks). Emails sent to him for feedback were ignored til the end of the semester. Only 1 of several assignments were graded to include the exams. The student has no way of knowing what their status is throughout the class.

Comment:
Prof slow at first to answer emails; got better later on. VERY slow to grade briefs and tests, except for final. Briefs were hard. Exams not bad due to study sheets that told you what essays to expect. No class interaction at all (eg on-line discussions). Basically you taught yourself the material. I did learn a lot, however. I got an A.

I took this class as an online class. The Professor is very smart, but he is horrible at responding to emails in a timely matter (if at all). He didn't even grade everything I turned in. Very smart but very unorganized.

He's one of the toughest Professors I've had, but he's fair and I have never learned so much from a class. If you take it during intersession beware: he'll do a semester of material in 4 weeks. But if you're prepared to read, think and devote yourself, you will be a very informed citizen. Every American should be required to take his class.

Dr. Comparato has a very sarcastic sense of humor, but he knows his stuff. I learned more with him than any other professor I have ever had. It's true you have to work hard--but it's entirely worth it! And he isn't a staunch conservative--that's hilarious. He's totally liberal. Don't say things you aren't sure of!! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!

All of the classes I have taken with Dr. Comparato were extremely hard, but that is because he pushes you. You have to put a lot of effort in to obtain a good grade, and if you go in to his office, he is very helpful and kind. The only reason people don't do well in his classes is because he doesn't coddle his students. He's a great professor!

This class was extremely hard, and he presented th material in a way that made it hard to understand. His tests are extremely difficult, and he is not helpful at all if you have questions about anything you don't understand. Awful Experience!

Very hard class, but excellent professor. You do need to work your ass off, but if you put some effort, you can totally pass the class. He is very helpful and knows his stuff. I will not deny that the class was hard, but today I know so much more about civil liberties than the average american does, and I learned with Dr. Comparato.
