One of my favorite classes @ purdue. I def became a better writer after taking her class. Not hard if you do the reading.

At times she was very unprofessional. Her cell phone rang in class many times and she always seemed flustered. She assigned the same reading assignment twice, on accident, and she had a list of "Great Works" saying that Satre wrote The Plague. She was unclear with what she expected from the students when she graded the first drafts of our papers.

She doesn't like it when you criticize the other students' work too much. Even if it's bad. She'll find nice things to say about even the stupidest stories. And believe me, they got pretty stupid. I really resented having to sit there while she praised bad writing. I was at a more advanced level, and I could have used more focus on craft.

Sadly, Sharon loves to compliment horrible work, and it got to the point where if I read something terrible in a class assignment I could point out what parts she would be ecstatic about. If you want your ego stroked and want to stroke hers back, take her. But if you're not willing to be a suck-up, prepare for a C or worse, even if you do the work.

She is exactly the kind of teacher who can help you improve your writing--if you really want to do the work and get better. She's passionate, she *actually* reads and responds to student work, and she is genuine in her love of writing as both as a craft and a way of life.
