Had 2 Old English courses with him years ago. He was amazing! We translated, read and discussed an insane amount of stuff. I lived in constant terror that I hadn't translated enough lines for the day, but omg he was such a great professor!!! He has an odd sense of humor, but he is funny too -- once you track with his style.

Took Prof. Hughes' Vikings course, and it was one of the most interesting courses I've had at university. The depth of his knowledge is amazing, and he does a fantastic job of conveying this information. Definitely among my favorite professors here.

I took his Tolkien class and was blown away but what an accomplished scholar he is. He is also fluent in many ancient languages, including Old Norse and Sanskrit, and actually it's a pity that many of the students were not up to his intellectual level ("Have you read Harry Potter?") He's very kind and wants everyone to get an A and enjoy class.

Prof Hughes knows a lot about history, but I never feel like we accomplish much. We go over lots of different literature but dont dedicate nearly enough time to it. I feel that I'm not taking much from this class that I couldn't have by just reading the pieces by myself...But he is a nice guy.
