Prof. Carey is one of my favorite teachers in college thus far. There is never anything unexpected; He emails everyone after each class with the agenda for the following week (and the format is always the same). CAVETE DISCIPULI: THIS IS NOT A COURSE JUST FOR GEN EDS! The LATN sequence is for someone very motivated to study the language. HARD WORK!

Fantastic professor--I've never taken Latin before, but he's willing to explain concepts multiple times. He's very encouraging if you're willing to work hard. Loves it if you come to office hours before class and ask questions. Incredibly knowledgeable, funny guy. One of my favorite classes!

He is a nice guy and knows his stuff, but isn't great a great teacher. If you are self motivated and/or linguistically inclined, you will do well, but I wish he spent more time teaching grammar. I've had a semester off now and feel like I didn't learn anything after two and a half years.

This man is great!! He knows so much stuff. If you are willing to be taught, he can teach you a wealth of info. He is a lot of fun. And the language is what is hard, but he is very very cool. "Often wrong, never doubtful!" You made Latin.

Strangely, particularly in the first year he was very discouraging about how difficult latin was and I think ended up scaring many people away. I know I was worried, yet his tests were really easy. He doesn't really teach, you have to teach yourself everything from handouts on his website. He doesn't force you to translate either.

Latin is hard, not the professor. He tells you EXACTLY what will be on each quiz and test before you take them. Added Bonus: You only have to translate from Latin to English. However, if you have never taken Latin, this is not the class for you. He spends little time teaching essential concepts.

Professor Carey spent at least three classes telling us to drop the class if we weren't willing to spend at least 2 hours a night studying. That's just ridiculous.

He hails the students that can translate in their sleep, but shows impatients with the typical beginner student's efforts. This discourages the average students, and he then shows daily frustration when they don't volunteer after being put down on a regular basis. He knows his stuff, but is terrible at facilitating the learning of a tough language.

Extremely fun teacher. He knows everything about everything and will go off on really cool tangents about anything. It is a hard class but only because Latin, like any language, deals a lot with memorization. Spend a lot of time in HW and you'll really enjoy this class. Oh and he says to drop out only if you expect a really easy A. ??Uninspiring???

This is the easiest class I've ever taken in college. He is a bit intimidating, but a good teacher. He doesn't move fast enough or teach enough. If you take 201 anywhere else after having him you will be completely lost and extremely far behind. He moves through the concepts at a snail's pace.

While the professor is very knowledgeable in Latin and in many other areas, he is also very discouraging. During the course of the semester there are 4 exams. That's it!! We just came to class to read the text. He never really taught anything. You need to use the latin library and literally teach yourself. He is not very helpful.

Two tests & one article review; tests required us to define terms and comment on an aspect of Roman law in depth. IĆ¢€™m a fan of teaching a subject in chronological history; Carey went by subject area and I found it hard to grasp the full context of an historical innovation. Loves his Latin students and got sidetracked by them more than once.

His off-course tangents make the class. He really knows quite a bit about everything. Hard to follow at first, especially if you have no background in latin. The class is pretty straight forward, 4/5 tests plus class participation. And he's cute. :)

Horrible motivator. Doesn't want to grade tests, tries to get people to drop his class. Rude and answers cell phone in class and actually talks for minutes at a time while we have to wait and stare at him.

His class has a high drop rate, but the subject is to blame for that. He's an extremely good teacher- very educated and interesting.
