Comment:

She is a solid choice, honestly. Her humor is kind of, well, "boundary-pushing" sometimes, but if you don't take it to heart then she is fun. You're graded on 10 quizzes and 2 essays (you really only write 1 of them). It is fairly laid back if you do the readings.

This seemed like a cool class at first, since all you do is read some plays and take mini quizzes on them. We had pretty good discussions in class as well that I enjoyed. However, this professor was not the best grader and even shot some of my creative ideas down when it came to papers. I did everything she asked yet still got a C in the class.

Comment:

She's bit odd--crude and inappropriate at times--but not in a mean way. Class is just discussing the stories; most ppl stay silent. Quizzes are easy if you do the reading. The two papers are pretty easy too. Seems like she doesn't take teaching the class seriously because it's undergrad. Grading system is nonsensical but works to your advantage.

This professor is my least favorite ever. Not only did she make several sexist/racist comments a class, but she was completely uninterested in any opinions not mirroring her own. She required that we buy two texts books but hardly used either, instead she had us waste print money on dozens of PDF files.

Dr. Gomez-Vega is crass, rude, and completely disinterested in anything that doesn't match her own opinion. I like professors with a sense of humor, but this passed beyond acceptable and the content was largely listening to her talk about previous classes. This was an incredibly easy A which is not what I wanted. At the grad level I wanted to learn

Gomez-Vega is frank, but that beats the pandering or condescending crap one gets from most professors at NIU. Her classes are great if you want to explore theories behind an author's intent. Do the readings for the quizzes (easy!), and really THINK about the material when writing papers & you'll do well in her classes. She made me a better writer.

I have had Gomez-Vega for two english courses. She is by far my favorite english teacher. She is very knowledgeable but does not beat the death out of a text which is so refreshing. In class quizzes with one 5-7 page paper (the syllabus says more, but she always axes one). Most classes you will stay no more than 45 minutes. Take her classes!!

Great class! It's not hard to get an A in this class if you read the works (most are pretty short), show up and can write a decent paper. She's not offensive at all...she keeps it real and calls a spade a spade. "Contemporary" lit is not all sunshine and roses and she does not mince words in telling you so. Welcome to the real world.

I LOVED this class. For those who complain about her "offensive" speech, welcome to the real world. She keeps it real. She treated everyone in our class equally and kept it interesting. We also did some work that was outside the "mainstream", which was a nice change from the "standards".
