He only gives out four tests the whole semester and each are worth 25% of your grade. They aren't hard though. He was a good teacher and made sense.

He knows the material and made the class engaging and interesting. He appreciates students comments on the films watched during discussions and has a very clear course layout. Reading the book is recommended to learn some of the more technical terms for shots and lighting for the exams, but he does explain them in class.

Professor Haltof is one of the best professors at NMU. I had him for National Cinema and he is truly passionate about what he teaches. He is extremely knowledgeable about Central European film and that is clear in his teachings. Haltof rarely, if ever, assigns papers so your grade is purely based on tests. Highly recommend any of his classes!

Took "Intro to Film" to fulfill a LA requirement. His lectures were interesting, and accentuated by his attractive accent. Exams were difficult, as he didn't lecture on book material, yet relied heavily on it for exams. The movie selections were superb. Overall, great course, great professor.

I've taken 5 classes with Haltof, so it should be obvious that he's my favorite professor. He knows his stuff and that's helped me become more passionate about film. In EN 125/225, readings aren't necessary to do well on exams but I researched online on my own. Higher up, however, there are some references to the text and 6-7 pg papers. Still easy!

This was a great class and I highly recommend it to anyone interested in film. Haltof makes the class very interesting and when half of the class is based on watching amazing films, why not take it? There is no final and mostly your grade is based on four very easy exams. He is very friendly and very willing to help or answer any questions.

Haltof is the best professor I've had. VERY knowledgeable in English, film, and history. Class moved at a slow pace, so it's easy to keep up but not boring. Not a difficult grader, but make sure to take your papers to the writing center before turning them in. Stay open minded when you watch the films. Take his class and you wont regret it

Have taken multiple classes with Marek, going to take more. Very knowledgeable, especially in Eastern European cinema. Also friendly and encouraging. I'm going on in film studies and he is a great help in preparing myself. If you do the reading and go to class, it's not only easy, but fun and interesting too. If you listen, he's also pretty funny.

i took him for authorship in cinema and intro to film. they were both great classes that showed a wide variety of films. he expects well written papers, the tests weren't too hard, and he is overall a great teacher who knows a lot about his subject (and has written multiple books).

Comment:
I like Haltoff and consider him a friend. In truth though, his understanding of film is very abstract and sometimes insubstantial. He has great knowledge of the very theoretical, but barely grasp many of the most basic practical aspects of film. To my mind, this a poor combination. I leads him to make questionable claims about filmmakers intent

Prof. Haltof is an amazing professor! Very willing to help and his accent is sexy although difficult to understand sometimes. Take his class if you need to fill that liberal. 4 exams in the class, non-cumulative, easy if you study.

The films he chooses will soon become some of your favorites. He's one of the foremost film critics in eastern Europe, and he shows a great range of films in Intro to Film and Intro to World Cinema. Grades easily, so all in all a great prof to take any class with.

very educated, interesting professor. only bad thing is that classes start to repeat themselves if you take too many. very willing to help you with anything, even if he does seem a bit standoffish.
