Comment:
Rohn is very intelligent and wise, but his comments/responses to students seem prestigious and he can come off as rude. Doesn't feel like there is any relationship between him and his class. Lectures are VERY monotonous amd his teaching style is not engaging, making it extremely difficult to understand what is important for future tests.

Matt Rohn is a good prof. I'm a math/ science major and I took art history over interim. I had a pretty strong dislike for art and history but was pleasantly surprised by how painless the class was. It's a pretty easy A if you put in any minimal effort and I feel like I gained some appreciation for visual art.

Always taught with the lights off and was not very interesting during lectures which seemed to be EVERY class when this was a conversation program. Will avoid taking this professor as long as I go to school here.

Taken over interim. 2 solid hours of 19th century Art History with Rohn can get a bit dry, but he has lots of interesting insights. Sometimes his lectures go into really heavy topics for no apparent reason.

Matt Rohn is a very smart and interesting person and I believe some of these ratings are pretty harsh. While his instructions for papers are quite vague, he is willing to explain more and help you develop ideas if you go to office hours. Participate in discussions. He loves his art!

I took American Conversations from him. Professor Rohn was very unclear with expectations about papers, and provided feedback on papers that was useless. He rambles in class, and we spent almost the whole semester talking about "dense facts". My roommate also took a class from him, revised a paper 6 times, and still didn't get an A.

Professor Rohn was never clear about what he wanted for papers--it was very frustrating, and his feedback was useless. Class was also very boring. My roommate took a class from him, revised a paper 6 times and still got an A-

Prof. Rohn can be very helpful and insightful, but can be very low-energy during the morning hours. If you are having trouble in class, meet with him during office hours; he seems to love to discuss issues if you give the effort to work towards them.

Very boring lecturer. Unless you have a deep interest in art and art history, don't take his class. Papers are very poorly explained, so make sure to talk to him frequently in his office hours to be sure of what he wants.

Comment:
Not a very good teacher. He's very knowledgeable and smart, but he gives out arbitrary bad grades and writes his tests so hard that a 30/50 ends up being a B+ on the curve. No way of knowing what he wants you to remember, since some of the readings are irrelevant and he doesn't give clear notes. He's also somewhat rude.

This was the only class I took solely for the GE, and I LOVED it. Prof. Rohn is ridiculously knowledgeable and though he may seem unapproachable at first is actually quite easy to talk to. Assignments are clear and straightforward. I had never taken an art or art history course before this class; Prof. Rohn made me want to take more of them.

Comment:
Yes, Rohn has a deep grumbling voice and speaks quite slowly, but he's probably the most knowledgeable prof I've had. Though his writing assignments are vague, he is more than willing to meet with you and discuss them. He can seem disorganized because he has so much to say on a subject, but it's all useful info.

Matt knows his stuff that is for sure but he is extremely difficult. He has a philosphy that if your not an Art History major than you will not get an A in his 101 level Art History class. He could afford to be a little more humble to his classes.

Every writing assignment is so vague and that's kind of frustrating. His voice is very droning and monotonous and his lectures are a bit disorganized. Easy assignments (all reading) and some interesting class discussions. Once you get used to him he's a good guy and cares about his students.

He's okay, maybe a bit formal, but that's to be expected of a college professor. Needs to work on sense of humor. Not very approachable.....rather intimidating....and VERY SCARY.

Very boring class but the homework is easy (just readings), and there's no tests and few papers. Papers are often unclear in direction and graded pretty harshly. Likes to relate everything to architecture/art, which can be kind've cool, and had us over to his house for brunch for the final exam.

Way too difficult for an intro class. His lectures are disjointed but he expects you to understand them without any background in art. Really hard grader, impossible to please. Do not take an intro class from him!

Received my lowest grade ever in his class. Unclear expectations on papers, seemed to have favorite students and topics. I was interested in the topic and attended every class, but he refused to call on me and his comments on my papers were not very pointed or helpful. Full of information in his lectures, though a boring style.

Matt Rohn is really not nearly as bad as some of these ratings suggest. He's a tough grader at times (and not very tactful in his feedback), but usually, it just helps to make you a better writer. I liked his in-class style, though he did tend to overpower the other teacher of the class.
