Comment:

Professor Hime is very enthusiastic about music and this class will teach a lot about music. However, as someone with 0 previous music experience, this class was HARD. It was a struggle to be able to effectively learn and apply the concepts, especially in the beginning. By the end of the semester, I got much better, attesting Michael's ability.

Comment:

The worst and most boring class I have ever taken by far. Hime is nice enough, but I struggled to stay awake every single class and I never paid attention in class. Still got an A, but only because I had previous music experience, so if you don't you will struggle. He expects a lot of work and memorization from you. Would not recommend. STAY AWAY.

Michael is the best! His classes are the rare trifecta of easy, well-taught, & extremely interesting to anyone with the slightest curiosity about the subject matter. He makes sure that his students are prepared for papers and exams, and really makes an effort to get to know everyone individually. Funny, kind, & has a tangible love for his subject.

So passionate about music and so knowledgable. Makes it easy to understand and gets you excited to learn about music. Paper assignments are pretty easy and the tests, if you study using his study guide, are quite manageable. Stay on top of the listening lists and you'll do well. He's also accessible if you ever want to chat about music out of class

Professor Hime is amazing! He passionately lectures about the music and inspires the class to appreciate it. He is very knowldgeable about the material and explains it really well. To do well, do all your posts and spend time listening to the music. If you get the chance to take this class or any other class by him, go for it; You won't regret it.

Michael is the best lecturer you will ever have. It's impossible not to leave his class feeling fired up about what he's covered that day. He's engaging, accessible, and hilarious. This class will literally permanently change the way you listen to music.

I''m an engineer taking this class for liberals arts credit and have been blown away by the effort that Hime puts into his lectures. He goes to great lengths kindle an interest in music in his students. I wish more liberal arts classes were like his. Take this class if you get the chance. it is completely worth it.

Great teacher. There is a lot of memorization, but studying really isn't required until the day before test. Just pay attention to the format of the concert reviews and you'll be fine!

I took this course because I already had pretty good knowledge on music theory, and I am an ardent life fan of symphonies and other classical music. For me, this was easy. By the end of the course, you will be expected to recognize the masterpiece just by listening to the melodies.

Hime is an awesome teacher! He has been teaching this course for about 20 years! Amazingly, he is still full of passion on every class! I am not a music person, but I still do well in the class by just reviewing notes and listening to playlists. I recommend this class to anyone who wants take a break from all other stressful classes!

Comment:

Hime is one of Vanderbilt's best teachers. He is enthusiastic and interesting; he tells jokes, and some of them are even funny. The first test (on music theory) will be difficult if you have no background in music. The rest of the class is easy as long as you listen to the music and focus on it--don't try to multitask.

In four years at VU, Hime is the first professor to inspire me enough to rate here. He is an engaging teacher who truly cares about his students, and his class is fun. If you have any interest in music, take this class! Caution: May be a bit harder if you have no music background, but not impossible. And don't fall behind on listening to the music!

Comment:

Professor Hime is a very fun and interesting lecturer, although his grading is subjective, masked by the supposed objectivity of musical analysis. Unless you are VERY interested in memorizing the vast number of exceptions to the vague rules that govern Music Lit, avoid this class. Great guy, but very difficult for a 100 level course.

I enjoy classical music. I did not enjoy MUSL 140. Hard to appreciate music when you have to memorize every movement of 20 different pieces to the point where you can pick out a 20 second snippet with no context. Also, concert reviews are absurd as he asks you to review styles he has not covered in class.

Comment:

The Hime clearly cares about both his students and the subject matter. Not a class that is too hard for students who do not read music/play instruments? I don't, and I had no trouble getting an A in the course with average/minimal work. A funny guy who likes to make class fun. I'd recommend him and this course to anyone.
