The course itself was interesting and one you will enjoy taking. Pay attention during lectures and take notes, even though they sometimes get off topic, it will make the written essay final much easier. Keep up on the journals, if you wait until the end of the semester, it will bury your grade. Small class sizes make it very easy to see who skips.

Requires 1500 word journal entries a week over his inane ramblings and poor film choice; buy two books HE WROTE entirely on dark comedy despite this being a genreS class. All of his picks revolve around egotistical, chauvenist white men (gee, I wonder why?). Hollywood has made great strides since the 70s and 80s, but he is stuck in the past.

This professor is one of few that I despise. He isnt very clear on anything though he wants things done rather specifically. He made us buy two of his own books that both are strictly about dark comedy though the class is about other genres as well. Hes also given us handouts that are always written by himself. Seems a bit self centered, no?

If you are really into film then you will probably love his lectures, but I could understand people finding them boring. You start the class watching older films which may discourage some, but all the films are pretty good. Be aware of the journal though. He's not as tough as a grader as said but make sure to follow the guidelines to the journal.

Gehring was rude to me and not very understanding, which I didn't appreciate. The class wasn't taught well, and I left not knowing what I had just learned. I got to see 8 movies I'd never seen before, so theres that. He's intelligent and loves to make sure everyone knows it, which can result in long lectures off topic.

Wes is great! The films you watch are fantastic, and the discussions are very stimulating. If you like film take this class. But, what ever you do DO NOT SKIP THE JOURNALS!!! It is a nightmare to catch up with them.

Gehring is a terribly tough grader. Even if you complete all of the requirements of his essays and journal, and do them well, I can guarantee you that you won't get anywhere near a perfect score. No one got a 100% on anything all semester. This class was extremely hard and I had to really work to get a good grade in the class.

One of the best professors I've had at Ball State. Lectures are interesting and the films we screened each week were great. He's a very helpful and nice guy who loves what he teaches and genuinely cares about his students. Just remember to keep up with the journals!

Prof. Gehring is a remarkable professor probably the best prof. I've had at BSU. His lectures are very entertaining and you are shown some excellent films. It is not difficult to do well in the course if you attend class regularly.

Professor Gehring is an extremely smart guy. He can be a bit kooky at times with off-handed comments, but I would definitely suggest him. He's helpful and kind. Be sure to keep up with the weekly journals. Saving them to the end can be terrible. If you aren't into movies made prior to 1946, you probably won't enjoy 70% of the screenings in 360.

He's a really entertaining guy who is passionate about old film. He seems like he's cranky, but he's actually hilarious and surprisingly sweet when you talk to him face to face.

Pretty funny guy. I enjoyed going to class, although sometimes they were a little boring. For the most part, the films we watched were entertaining. He is obsessed with Chaplin, though, so use that to your advantage if you can.

Comment:
Gehring is far too obsessed with dusty old cinema like Chaplain and Buster Keaton. His definition of many genres is too limited. With dark comedy (best film genre, in my opinion) he gives such abyssmal examples and makes it seem boring. Don't get your hopes up. His textbooks, which he authored, aren't that entertaining either.
