Comment:

He cares a lot and gives great crit where he is direct but still respectful. He's here to improve your project, not to be nice. That said, it's true that he rambles a lot and is bad at time management to divide even desk crit time among students. He has a lot of ideas so he proposes a lot of random tasks for studio, which is sometimes frustrating.

I thought he was a total nut until he helped me realize that this what I want to do with my life. If you don't love random historical facts and stories then you'll get annoyed by his lectures. The way I got through was "wow.. what even" and writing everything down, but once you look past his quirks Cathcart is brilliant and knows so much.

Worst teacher I have ever had. No matter the situation, do not take any course taught by Colin Cathcart. The fact that he is still teaching is unbelievable. Again, avoid at all costs.

DO NOT TAKE THAT CLASS. It is definitely the worst class I've ever taken. I got a B in the end but it was so boring and I literally learnt nothing. Total waste of money. He is a nice person but he is just all around the place and the class and all the assignments are so confusing.

You will wonder, what exactly is he asking us to do? Where is there an accurate syllabus for us to read what he wants for these projects? How does he grade? He more or less seems to make up his class assignments/projects on the car-ride to the college. Except for when your early enough for him to ask your opinion. Fun guy though, he'll joke a lot

He's an okay guy, but horrible at teaching. I would not recommend this class unless you enjoy someone who is unorganized, does not answer questions, and does not follow the syllabus. Cathcart expects his students to teach themselves instead of him teaching the students. Also there are many mandatory field trips to his various homes. Do not take!!

You will work way more in this class than he will. He talked on his phone during our final and he started the final an entire hour after we were supposed to start because he did not print the tests when he arrived.He has Lofty ideals for his class that have no place in reality. If you have a background in Art History, this class is easier.

One of the worst class that I have taken so far. It is hard to get response from email so it is difficult to get help outside of class. The teachings are very unorganized and hard to know the main points for what to study for the test.

almost didnt take him because of these reviews but i'm glad i did. yes, often unorganized, late, and long-winded. but he's very helpful when u go to office hrs. lenient teaching style. constructive criticism. expect long hrs in the lab and time-consuming projects. make sure final vs of projects are good. he's interested in your progress over time.

Oh jesus. Avoid him at all costs. He seems like a very nice guy and is very into what he does it's just unfortunate that what he does makes you want to fall asleep. Way too much reading to do however not from the textbooks, so what the use was in buying them i don't know. Just say no. Unless you really love the topic I would suggest not taking him.

Too much emphasis placed on a art core class. Topics can be very interesting, but when it comes down to midterm and final, you have to memerize a lot. Tough grader on assignments. Avoid if you just want to take an easy core class.

I worked my ass off in that class--harder than I have in any other class to get a b-, which actually ended up being a lot higher than I expected, and the class wan't even interesting enough to be worth it. Only take this if you're really interested cause I heard the other teacher is equally horrible.
