Shoemaker is a good prof, and very intelligent. He is also pretty funny. His tests are really tricky and sometimes bogus, they are structured a certain way that some people are better at. Go to class every day and review sessions. Lots of extra credit opportunities. Shoemaker is also very opinionated and speaks his mind about politics in class.

Likes: great lectures (knows American history inside and out), solid review sessions, very timely and willing to help, EXTRA CREDIT!! (the only reason I got an A); Dislikes: fairly difficult exams, a good amount of reading, essay questions on each exam (he's a tough grader on those)

Shoemaker is always willing to answer questions within a timely manner over emails. His tests are very hard if you do not do the reading and go to class. Also, go to his review sessions. He adds in little phrases and hints that appear on the tests. Intelligent but hard grader.

Study long and hard for his tests. Very difficult and tricky. If you're interested in the subject, he's great. If you're like me and have no interest in American history, not so much.

GREAT PROFESSOR. Fun and interesting lectures that have a lot to learn from them. His grading policy that a C should be the average is kind of bad but his class his outstanding. Please take him because you will learn the value of history and how it connects.

I originally had Dr. Shoemaker for Hist 202 but liked him so much I also took Hist 186 and Hist 201 with him as well. Well organized lectures, speaks clearly, class is fairly straightforward and interesting. Writes tricky tests.

dr. shoemaker is an amazing prof! his classes are always interesting and he seriously knows what he is talking about. make sure you read the textbook otherwise tests suck. has 2 study sessions before every exam, and there is no reason you won't do well if you read the book and go to the study sessions! gives lots of extra credit too. fun guy!

His tests are pretty difficult- even if you study. For example, he has multiple choice questions that are pretty hard and annoying. He seems to enjoy messing people up on those. His "short answer" question on his exam really means "essay" and no matter how much you write, it isn't good enough.

Seems like a nice guy, but i have a great interest in history and i am struggling in the class. Lectures are hard to pay attention to because he goes off on tangents. Tests are also difficult, most people i saw get C's. He does give lots of extra credit though.

If you aren't all that interested in history and just taking this for a gen ed, DO NOT take this class! You will find it very boring and very difficult. However, Earl is extemely nice and helpful. If you are struggling at all, go to his office because he will really go the distance to help you if you are willing to put in a little effort. GREAT guy

Great Class!!! His lectures really stick in your head! Tests are very fair and as long as your review your notes/outlines you should do well in the class. He also give you plenty of ways to get extra credit!! No Papers. Final is not cumalative. But he is revamping the course for the Fall so who knows...
