Class grade comes entirely from exams so READ and TAKE NOTES on his lectures. He does not use powerpoints or electronics. A little old fashioned but really knows his stuff. Amazing heart and hilarious once you choose to not be offended by his directness and slightly grouchy personality. So proud of my A- that I worked hard for.

Exams are hand-written. Take good notes, that's your study material. MUST pay attention in class. Not too bad though because he goes off on story-telling tangents. Engaging and funny. He is an opinionated person so if you get easily offended I don't recommend him.

He didn't provide study guides, his grading criteria was never established, and he expected us to read books that were dry and long.

Dr. Spann is hilarious and super smart. He knows his stuff. If you don't like history, you wont like him. If you aren't a conservitive, you won't like him. But I love having class with him and really look up to him. He is just awesome.

Very challenging but keeps you interested. The close-minded should not take this class. He will open your eyes to multiple point of views. He has a different opinion of the Civil War which some cannot understand because they are only capable of regurgitation. Hard but you will learn a lot.

1: attendance policy is completely unfair. Whole letter grades were taken off when he didn't even respond to communication with me to get them resolved. 2: I respect a man with convictions and strong opinions, but to spread his ideals in the way he did, completely unprofessional and unbecoming.

Great professor, keeps things interesting by getting animated at times! Does use the textbooks!! Tests are very difficult. This man knows history, and teaches it accurately, none of the "politically correct" history that our society is using these days. Would recommend, but be prepared to do a LOT of reading!

Anyone who thinks he is hateful clearly doesn't ever talk to the man outside of class. He is hard but pay attention and take notes and its not out of reach. A brilliant man who isn't afraid to challenge the politically correct history that most of us have been taught, like the absurd idea that anyone who sympathizes with the south is a ****.

He is a the worst I have ever had...closed minded, hateful and uses God as his backing for his views. I cant imagine it being any worse. He holds Asbury back from moving forward into the future. Take any other prof you can. Avoid Spann.

Had him for Western Civ last semester. Although many dislike him, I thought he was great! He appears a bit stern at times but has humility and will def. make you laugh with some random stories. Tests - just write down a note or two about each item on his review sheets, read the small books (which are very interesting), and you'll be FINE!
