He is hands down the best professor I have ever had. He truly cares about what he is teaching you, and his students. You will walk away an expert if you actually care about this class. I learned things I never knew, and retained the information because he makes it interesting. You HAVE to participate, and assigned seating.

Comment:

Haines is a great teacher. He's extremely fair and very clear on what he expects from you. He has a great way of getting you interested in topics you normally wouldn't be interested in. His tests aren't easy but if you do the readings and pay attention you'll do fine. Overall he's a good guy, humble, etc. I have nothing bad to say about him.

Comment:

One of my favorite professors. Very respectful, helpful, and down-to-earth guy. Had him for 3 separate semesters and enjoyed all his classes. Expects active participation and grades participation/attendance, but as long as you show up to class, take notes, and at least briefly go over any assigned readings, you'll do just fine.

Great Professor, easy class if you read and study. The only thing that I didn't like was you HAVE to participate a certain number of times (and he keeps track) I got a 50% on participation and came to every class and got a 97, 84, 94, 87 on my test and still received just a B+ because of participation so TALK! oh and there is assigned seating

Great teacher but dont take this class if you dont like to write. Instead of pop quizzes you write essays which take up A LOT of time, it should be a writing intensive. Other than that he was helpful, great guy to work with. Tests are fair if you do the work

He is a genius yet humble. He wont push his ideas on you & is always willing to hear yours out. If you pay attention, show up to class, keep up with your readings, & study you will do well in class. If you're looking for an Easy A then you won't want to take his classes, but, if you love Soc like I do you will do well!

very interesting class. a few test, 5 current event papers (only 2 pages long), and one project. tests are easy if you did the reading and used the study guidelines he provides. hes really nice, easy to talk to and keeps class interesting and always considers your opinion and never makes you feel stupid

Good man. Passionate about all topics he teaches about because of the work that he has done within the fields (Capital Punishment, Social Movements). Lectures are super boring, dry, unenthusiastic,finishing about 5 slides on a good day. READ or YOU WILL STRUGGLE. Don't use your phone at all in class!attendance is mandatory!Have coffee before class!

Knowledgable, but test are tough. Things that you dont think will be on the test, will be. Multiple choice, short answer, and essay. Final is cumulative. Learn some interesting stuff, and repeat some basic sociological terms. Okay class... but it is not what you expect for violence. Herb is a good guy, but expect to read a lot, and take pop quizzes

he's very passionate about what he does which rubs off on his students. haines is very knowledeable concerning the death penalty and conveys his teachings well. i wish that i had taken this professor earlier in my college career rather than have waited until my last semester. i love going to the class.

AWESOME class. I learned so much!! An excellent choice if you are concerned about the level of violence in the world, as I am. If we want to reduce the amount of violence in the world, we need to learn what CAUSES it. This is an excellent class for this. Asks questions that really make you THINK! Recommend ANY class with this professor, hands down.

This was my second class with Herb and I wish I could take more. He's a really nice guy, very straight forward, good powerpoints. Do the readings he assigns, no matter how long some may be, and I hate reading....and you'll ace the tests.
