1. very kind, accommodating, liberal. 2. show difficult examples in class. tests are easier than some class examples and similar to easy parts of homework. 3. splits exam in two parts: easy part in class , difficult part take-home. 4. never return take-home portion to class. 5. some explanation is fuzzy. 6. kinda rush too much at the end.

great professor! teaches by the book and assigns hw every week and must be turn it. its a must to complete all hw, it prepares you for the tests. there are two parts for the midterm and final (in classtake home). his tests are fair based on lectures and hw. Not a hard grader. Awesome class really enjoyed it. do recommend taking him :)

Comment:

Kindest and most accommodating math professor you'll ever meet. Although he does go off topic and goes over too many long proofs, don't be scared. I actually dropped the class a year ago after 1 day of being there. Symbols and proofs will seem scary, but it's a piece of cake with time. In class tests are easy, take home requires work! Recommended!!

Yet another pleasant experience with Dr. Hoffman. He is perhaps the most accommodating professor when it comes to his students. Very respectful, helpful and courteous--a true gentleman. His class was quite easy also. Yes, he still goes off on somewhat unrelated topics, but if you're into that kind of thing, it's probably more interesting than not.

He's very nice and helpful but he spends too much time in class going over proofs and deriving equations. He does curve but you'll need to learn a lot on your own. He doesn't collect homework till the end.

He talks too much about nothing. he teaches opposite of what the homework is. he gives the hardest examples when he explains and confuses you. Good man, nice guy answers questions but just confusing!! easy class but Boring

I took with professor Hoffman many classes and the last class was Math 599. He was very helpful and determined to help me achieve my academic success in Math. His comments about the thesis did provide guidance and I highly recommend him to be your adviser. Today I got my Masters Diploma and I am very happy to say Dr. Hoffman was my adviser.

Very difficult to follow his lecture. Most of the time he talks to himself. But If you rely on yourself and teach yourself, you will find that his exams are easy. I got an A in his class, but I had to learn it myself. Don't take him if you are the type of student who rely on the teacher. other than this, he very nice and funny. I enjoyed his class.

First time taking a course by Dr. Hoffman and I found it very enjoyable for the most part. Hoffman really knows his stuff, but it's easy to get lost during lecture because the subject matter is rather abstract. My only gripe was the text assigned for the course which he co-wrote. Although decent, I'm sure there are better texts on analysis.

Hes flaky when it comes to the class overall.he is nice, and will try to help you as best he can.he will start talking about things that are not math 209-like phys and engineering things.homework is not required to be handed in at a certain time, just by the end of the quarter.do the homework, it will help you prepare for the tests.overall hes good

This class is soo abstract! Hoffman is a really nice man, but as a professor he needs practice.He teaches freely,doesn't follow any notes; so u cld imagine...he's all over the board. His inclass tests are pretty easy...just true and false q's are tricky so study the propositions. The take home tests are challenging! so use the week u have wisely!

Overall great professor and made math more interesting and fun. But during the first few weeks he went off topic on various tangents. He does it to get you interested in math but he should have did it less often; we fell behind the other MATH209 classes with our slower pace of material covered, then we had a lot more to cover in the last weeks.

I've had Dr. Hoffman for MATH 325, 390, 463, 467, 499, 551, and 559, and I'll be taking him for MATH 502A and B. Excellent professor through and through, and very much a gentleman. He absolutely loves math and loves talking about it. His tests are a mix of take-home and in-class portions, and he grades fairly and generously. Do your work = easy A.

If you like your math classes to be re-enactments of the textbook examples on the chalkboard then this guy is probably not for you. If you have even a passing interest in math I highly recommend Dr.Hoffman. BONUS: (optional) math puzzles on HW assignments. awesome!
