I miss this guy. I graduated last year and I genuinely miss his lectures, because they are laced with stories about death as well as the absurd things that have happened to him during his life. Be prepared for some mortality and a good bit of cynical humor. He's an awesome teacher and only a hard grader if you don't read the books... so read them.

The lectures were really great; Pr. Ireland made me appreciate all of the works read in the course, even the ones I was not excited to read. I remember going to class a few times feeling reluctant and tired and leaving feeling refreshed and excited about what was talked about. It was a great class taught by a great professor.

He's enjoys telling stories about his life, is a bit preoccupied with death and is liable to ask whether or not your parents are first cousins, but that doesn't make him a bad professor by any means. His classes are never boring and he's one of the brightest people I've ever met. Take his class if given the opportunity.

Best English class I have taken at HC by far (and I am a major). One of those professors where as long as you can defend your position he'll take it. Class is optional, but not going is your loss. A hard grader, but as long as you use office hours and actually try on papers, you will be fine!

GREAT professor! He makes everything interesting, especially since he always tells us his life stories. I hope he knows how much of an impact he makes on his students and how much they appreciate him and his help because he's truly one of a kind. While he is a tough grader, he is not unfair and he is always extremely helpful. HIGHLY recommend!

My favorite professor I've had at Holy Cross. Had him first semester of freshman year and it was a huge change from high school- class attendance is optional and you need to learn to work on your own. Very entertaining. My writing really improved after taking this course. Professor Ireland is really out of his mind, but awesome.

The only thing interesting about his lectures is when he dozes off telling his personal stories (which he seems to have one for everything). Sometimes hard to follow. Very funny with his cynical tone, but hard grader.

You either get him or you don't. I found him funny, but did not "get" this class. Attendance is optional, he passes papers back VERY late, and the final was borderline fatal. But that being said, some people LOVE this man. your call..

Quite possibly mentally unhinged, but one of the best professors I've had so far. He's very helpful in office hours, and was easier than he seemed in the end. He will terrify you on a daily basis.

Great professor. He is clearly a genius and though he's sometimes hard to follow because of it, it is worth taking his class just to listen to him speak for 50 minutes 3 times a week. Hard grader, but taking his class is totally worth it.

Professor Ireland is an extremely intelligent man, but he sometimes allows that to get in the way of his teaching. All in all, he helped me understand poetry in a new light. He's a tough grader, but if you go to office hours, he is always more than willing to help you. Beware - he does tell crazy stories about his life.

He keeps the class interesting with stories about his crazy life, but manages to relate them well to the material, allowing you to understand it better. This man clearly knows his stuff and helps the class see poetry in a different light. He is a difficult grader but if you follow his direction and go to office hours, you'll do just fine.

I miss this man so much. I really enojoyed this class. Ireland is so crazy, words can't explain. He can be a tough grader, but he always gives suggestions for improvement and is willing to help you with papers. I loved having him as a teacher - every class you wonder what ridiculous comment he will make next.

Of course he's a complete whacko, but that's what makes him so great! Interesting class, funny and insightful. Want a new perspective on literature? You definitely have to take him! My favorite professor in all my years and it's a shame I can't have him for my final semester at Holy Cross.

Very nice guy, but extremely hard. Unless you're an English major wouldn't recommend taking him. His tests are ridiculous, and he's extremely anal about papers. If you're looking for a class to take for a common requirement, he's not worth it.
