The best college professor I've had yet. He's energetic, funny, accommodating, and an extremely good teacher (not just a professor). He will make sure your ideas and expression of those ideas improve. His tutorial on Walden & the Liberal Arts will change the way you look at the world and literature for the better.

Super smart guy. Sometimes his lectures get very boring but if you can stay awake for them they circle back around and get interesting! Class discussions are EVERYTHING. Readings were super heavy but you can get away with SparkNotes most of the time. We wrote papers for every book we read; they were the only work we turned in that we got graded on.

Took a Trads & a seminar with him. Andrews is very kind, but can be intimidating just because he's so smart. His lectures were mind boggling (in a good way)- each one was like its own little academic paper. He's a tough grader, but always fair, & very willing to work with you. Don't be afraid to go to office hours- he's more approachable one on one

Very grandiose demeanor. Has old-fashion academic style that lacks adaptability to different learning backgrounds. He may know some pretty progressive theory necessary to teach to people, but good luck getting him to discuss it in class. All in all he's shown me the type of individual i want to steer clear from becoming in Academia.

Definitely a tough grader, but a really nice guy. We had great discussions. Not super approachable, but once you get to know him he really does care and he wants to talk to you.

Completely unapproachable and arrogant. He may be knowledgable in his field, but he has no idea how to teach. Assignments were incredibly unclear. Doesn't seem to have student's best interested at heart. Expects WAY too much from a 200 level class.

He has very high expectations for his students, which some might find frustrating, but others will rise to. His class was not easy, but was possibly the most valuable I had at Grinnell in terms of growing as a student and challenging myself.

Aah, he expects too much for a 200 level class. He's VERY intelligent but and expects his students to know almost as much as he does. Plus he's a tough grader. I learned a lot but still found the class boring at times/was never super excited about it.

Whether you believe it or not, he cares about you. Almost as much as he cares about the material. Read everythig he assigns, and put in extra research time for papers and you will do well. He just wants you to love literature as much as he does. And if you work hard for him, you will.

Only had him for tutorial so can't speak to ability in regular english classes..that said,I found our readings really interesting, our discussions, specially in the beginning, engaging, and his theory/overarching thesis behind the class compelling. hes not all that approachable and can be caught up in lecturing but I suppose a class worth a trying

Had him for tutorial. At first found him intimidating one on one, as he is very knowledgable, and I felt like a weak writer. Great in class, turns out to be very caring one-on-one as well, as long as he sees you making an effort. Not very accomodating, unless you take the time/effort to talk to him. Is very hard, but in the end I learned a lot.

Andrews is the best prof I've had at Grinnell in my two years. He's extremely well-read, insightful, and presents very clear and relevant assignments. I don't find him pretentious at all, and I despise pretentious people. He just expects some effort. If having expectations and knowledge makes one pretentious, give me more pretentious professors!

Amazing professor, passionate, knowledgeable. Not afraid to interject opinion that is extremely interesting and illuminating. If students are not pretentious themselves and hope to show off their knowledge they will greatly exceed and learn from Professor Andrews.

Professor Andrews' lectures are energetic, at times, captivating; unfortunately, he has yet to master key issues in critical theory. This would have been forgivable had he not made such pretentions to knowledge. But he did. If he can't answer your questions, he'll shift the topic. Wily little man.
