He focuses on the argument development of the paper. He is willing to read drafts and give helpful feedback. You just need to turn in paper early and revise drafts. If your paper is persuasive but not literacy, you will be fine. He focuses more on the argument in your paper rather than using beautiful words.

Guthrie was a great professor! One of my favorite classes thus far, he was realy helpful and was willing to assist on topics for assignments.

This class was interesting though the conversations in class dragged on some days. Guthrie is very helpful on giving advice about the direction in which your paper should go.

Loved him! Made the readings for the class interesting although the class went kind of slow at times. He is very wise though!

Comment:
He specifically said he assigned a book because it contained extremely graphic violence, makes ongoing reading assignments that pretty much reflects that kind of preference, and his unnecessary opinions he states in class are aggressively conservative. He really acts like the darkest teacher ever, and his spoken comments are beyond unbelievable!

Took him for 280, 211 and 308. Brilliant man. His voice takes some getting used to but he is very knowledgeably and funny if you're paying attention. Highly recommend him...he knows something about everything!

I took one of his classes and ended up dropping it. I have a disability and though I was registered with disability services, he was completely unwilling to be accommodating. Very disappointing.

One of my fondest daydreams entails listening to Guthrie reading Chaucer and Sidney aloud all day, his voice is so melodic. He does grade harshly, but is pretty good about giving you feedback and often rewards improvement. And he pushed back all our deadlines without us asking :)

I think Guthrie has swagger. For those who say grading is unfair, I've heard him say that the difference between a B+ and an A is whether the paper was enjoyable to read (take that for what you will). He may be monotone, but he's super smart and if you're listening, he has a good sense of humor. Don't judge by his 280 class- 280 is never fun.

Writing papers for Professor Guthrie is incredibly difficult because his criticism is vague. I had no idea how to improve any of my papers, even when I asked for extra help and advice. Plus, he's SO BORING. This class was a big fat nothing.

adorable. i wish so desperately that he were my grandfather. the class was interesting and he picked a great book list. fair grader in my opinion; never made less than a B. discussions were the equivalent of a lullaby, so take him in the afternoon if possible...and ditto on the not eating before coming to class.

Very smart, but also very boring. He lectures a lot - student participation is not factored into the course grade. His voice is a bit monotone, so don't come to class sleepy. Could be clearer on assignments, but very willing to help at all stages of writing. Grading is very very fair and he's very invested in making sure students write better.

A lot of people rave about him, but I think he's an average professor. Very smart man though. Don't take his class right after eating. A full stomach combined with his drawn-out style of speaking usually results in an unintentional nap during class.

This class was the worse ever and he was very unfair with the grading. Personally, he is an interesting person, but academically is really lame. He needs to retire or something.

Awww, dont pick on the voice. He has a poet's voice. I like it when he sings through the roll (did I mention hes manic about attendance?) 280 was tons of theory, which most lit students hate. He is a tough grader but gives constructive criticism. He wears delightfully prototypical english prof getups and was probably a heartbreaker back in tha day
