Really enjoyed the class b/c he encourages you to care about what's going on in the world. Didn't use the textbooks. PP for notes. Need to buy/use newspaper subscriptions. No late assignments. Always have the printed materials! Midterm and final is easy if you use the study guides. Grading on papers seems subjective but with journalistic reasoning.

He has no interest in hearing what students have to say unless it what he wants to hear. You thinn youre going to learn about all these amazing forms of media but no. ALL SEMESTER IT WAS THE INVASION OF PRIVACY AND NOTHING ELSE. And his study guides are trash because he doesnt even help review for the midterm or final. Dont waste your brain here

As someone whose majored is Mass Communications, I really enjoyed his class a lot. Theres no homework and quizzes. Your grade is heavily on the term paper (about privacy) and attendance as well as your midterm and final. Make sure to check the news often! Its not an easy A class but do the work and end up getting an B.

Professor Swil is really passionate about journalism and communications and it really shows through his classes! Some might say that his class is boring due to repetitiveness, however that's what made it flow better. He followed his syllabus to the T. I'm taking him again for Journalism 2 next semester!

Swils communication class so far hasnt been all that exciting. It just feels like the same routine everyday. Catch up on news, read article, take quick notes, watch clips. Also dont like how our term project is only limited to electronic privacy and election meddling when there are other things we could be discussing. He can be a bit rude to.

This class is a five minute discussion on electronic privacy articles. Then he will show you videos on electronic privacy. You will have to print all the articles that are on the syllabus. Term project is easy if you listen to his directions and use his sources he gives you in class.

The class is a 5 minute discussion, then a news article, a lecture, then a video. I studied more off the book, but to each their own since he did give lectures. Grades are not updated on canvas, so rely on him imputing your midterm grade. It's a informing class, but it's pretty boring unless you a very alert. Just extremely average.

He was okay. I didnt hate him, but I wouldn't take him again if I can avoid it. He made me realize how boring journalism was so i changed my major. The most annoying component was how much stuff we had to print out ourselves, and a lot of it we didn't even end up using. I did enjoy discussing current events at the beginning of each class though!

This class was alright. Professor Swil is interested in Mass Communications, but I found it hard to pay attention. Swil himself is a good person, and if you do well on the projects and show up to class you'll be okay. Use his study guides, and the term/final projects are easy if you write down sources when Swil gives them to you in class.

He's a journalist, you'll like his class if you are a news junkie. Attend the course meetings, read the book, submit a few assignments , participate and you'll get A. He'll call you out if your phone is on during class.

Straight forward class but never taking it again unless it was with another teacher. He's rude and dismissive and pretty unhelpful. I don't appreciate the sass he gives when a question is being asked, or otherwise. Aside from that, class is somewhat enjoyable

I will never take a class with this guy again. If I could go back to when I was registering for classes, I'd pick another teacher. This guy is not helpful when you ask questions. He shots down your answers and is rude. There's a lot of reading for the class. The class started out full but then people dropped the class really quickly. Only 10 stayed

He's a very smart guy and a cool teacher. He's very clear with the material he teaches and provides great notes, pay attention in class and you'll cut your study load for test. He assigns a final paper that you need to start collecting research ASAP. He forces students to be aware of current events, which is a good thing and mandatory.

He talks extremely slow and the lectures are long. Pay attention in class and take notes (I didn't use my textbook) He asks for participation but often times cuts students off to talk more himself. Easy A.

Swil is an ok professor. During his lectures he doesn't leave enough time for a discussion. There were numerous times when the class would start engaging in a particularly interesting topic and he would almost always cut off a student citing there wasn't enough time. A better professor would allow for extra time to actually engage students.

Once you realize what is expected you will realize how good a professor Mr. Swil is. I did not like having to keep up on the current events assignment, but now I have a broader understanding of the world, and more importantly what it takes to write a good article . You really have to work hard and be 100% accurate in your writing.

Mr Swil is a bit strict but fair! In the real world things don't always go smooth so he is just trying to prepare us for that! If you don't apply your self to your best ability, you may just not get the best out of his classes! If your honestly interested in the topics, he'll notice!
