A very difficult Professor. Everyone reads something different so that you can't follow what is going on in the class. While chairwomen, she made the comp exam virtually impossible to prepare for. Very tough grader on papers! She is way past retirement and it is time!

Comment:

I took Professor Welter's Women in US History graduate class this spring. She can be intimidating because you are made aware instantly and repeatedly throughout the semester of the caliber of her education and scholarship in the field. That said I loved her! She is extremely knowledgeable about her content area, witty, and willing to offer guidance

Comment:

As an Hunter alumnus of many years ago, I had Professor Welter for several classes. She is one of the reasons that I am a Full Professor in English today. She always encouraged me, was always accessible, and eminently fair. Yes, she was stunning, but she was more a blonde Jeanne Moreau type with hair askew, great scarves, and a terrific voice.

I loved professor Welter. I attended three different colleges/universities and she was the best thing I ever encountered at Hunter. She was caring, attentive and always pushed me to do my best. Was she a hard-ass as others have implied here? Yes! She didn't countenance BS. She was a great teacher and I enjoyed her classes immensely.

She is no longer at Hunter, but the truth is when I needed her help as a younger student, she seemed distant and cold. Unwilling to agree to any point I tried to make. Later I realized it was me, behind in my work, or needing a bail out, i.e. W's etc.. When I had to take her class, I was amazed at her knowledge, wit, demeanor and respect. Amazing!

I went to Professor Welter to get a course transferred from another university. Despite my very kind emails and phone mssgs, she was rude, she mocked me, she interrupted me when I tried to argue my point, and kept laughing at me. She did everything she could to make me lose my case, with the help of her secretary, Mr. Jones. Stay away from her!

Can alumni participate here? I attended two of her classes in the very early Seventies and look back at the experience with major fondness. She had an acerbic wit, but was never rude, and was very funny, as well as very intelligent. And by the way when I rated her "hot" I wasn't kidding. She was a striking, Patricia Neal type.

Dr. Welter has helped me solve problems more than once. She has preformed her job well in my opinion. American Intellectual History was thought provoking and her comments insightful. She has great experience and gives her knowledge freely.She is tough but fair and understanding.

She is a witty person. I like her and respect her. I can't say I learned tons from her class but you don't get many chances to learn from someone who is so honest about school and history.

Dr. Welter is EXTREMELY hurtful and rude and absolutely the WORST professor I have ever known. This woman controls the department and many grad students are held back from attaining their degrees due to her decisions. If you are interested in pursuing an MA in History or Social Studies Education do NOT complete it at Hunter College!!

This woman is extremely rude. I went to her during her office hours regarding credit transfer with a smile on my face and a clear question, and I left her office nearly in tears. She made me feel worthless and that's the worst affect a teacher can have on a student.
