Comment:
Obviously knowledgeable and has interesting connections, but the class lectures were a bit fluffy--a lot of hot air. Assignments were not clearly explained, and he intentionally did not give all of the students who earned bonus points for extra work (based on whim-inspired favoritism as far as I could tell). The grading rubric was also vague.

Yes, I say the class was easy, but it was easy because Cain made it so interesting! Berkeley is going to be sorely hurting with his absence. And who wouldn't love Bruce? Democrats and Republicans agree: Bruce rules. Even Arnold's campaign loves Bruce (see joinarnold.com).

Prof. Cain is an incredibly gifted person. He is an expert in his fields (i.e. redistricting, minority politics, etc) and will cut out the crap typically found in other P.S. classes. He is an extremely good lecturer and is dedicated to making the subject matter interesting to students. But he does expect a lot from his students. He expects CAL students to excel for being the brightest minds of the state and the country.

PS is a mediocre dept, but Cain is one of the few exceptions. His insights and knowledge into CA politics are thought-provoking and always interesting. He is an "ivory tower" prof--that is, famous, intimidating, and on the pompous side. Still, the class wa great. Participation was overemphasized in discussion so be prepared to talk and share freque

Professor Cain does a good job of relaying the info in a way that isn't overly wordy/complicated. PS 171 is probably one of the most useful polisci classes I've ever taken. The huge group project is quite annoying however, but it's worth it in the end.

His lectures and anecdotes are interesting--I've certainly learned a lot from this class. However, Professor Cain does spend at least 10 minutes every lecture on self-congratulation. If you can stomach his ego, it's a great class.
