I took Prof Hughes years ago, and absolutely loved his class. If you want to stay in your bubble and not think for yourself, by all means dont take his class. That doesnt change the fact that the man is brilliant, and keeps every lecture relevant to current events. Im not an over achiever, but I made an A in his class. Pro tip? Pay attention.

He was so scatterbrained it wasn't even funny. Essay tests. He won't tell you how long they should be. Write AT LEAST 2 pages on each topic if you want a B. Expects you to write a book I guess. 3 essay tests, 1 research paper. If you try you'll do fine, however I dreaded going to his class.

Learned nothing in this class except by reading the textbook. I was a 4.0 History major that had never gotten below an A on a single history paper in 3 1/2 years. He gave me a C & said my writing was not readable. Translation = my topic leaned a little conservative. Make sure he agrees with your opinion for an A.

When he bothered lecturing at all, he trailed off and mumbled a lot. He seemed disinterested in his job. I hated every second, and stopped showing up unless I had to turn a paper in. 3 assignments. Grading makes no sense. If you're interested in these courses, do yourself a favor and wait till he retires to take them if you actually want to learn.

I think Dr. Hughes is a great teacher. He really has a knack for teaching. I am taking two classes with him and I have registered for one more class with him next semester. He might not stay on track but you still learn things. Great Teacher!!

WORST teacher ever, and not just at APSU!!!! He said several **** things while teaching his class. The only way I learned anything in his class was by reading the textbook. In class I found that it was better to not pay attention to what he said because he usually had the dates and names wrong.

THE worst history professor at Austin Peay - by far. He bases your exam grades on how much you write and only reads the content of the first two pages. He also underlines everything you write that could vaguely be construed as ****, no matter how far reaching. He Didn't talk about NAM in a 60's HISTORY class because he didn't like war. Quit plz!

I didnt learn much about history in class. 3 grades: Midterm, Final, 10-15 page positional/research paper. Attendance not mandatory. Boring class. Does not discuss history much in class. I did learn one thing: to understand the history of our nation, we must study and understand capitalism. LIBERAL democrat. Communism paper = F. Civil rights = A :)

awesome professor.. the tests were easy essays.. stay the whole duration of the test and you will get a better grade guaranteed. If you write a short essay and leave,,get a lower grade. put everything in the essay tests and just "tell a good story" as he says. Funny man, but can be extremely boring too.. Voice recorders are a good idea..good luck

Well, I luved the guy! Even though he may mumble at times and we had 4 text books, I thought the class as a whole was interesting! If you like to read you will too!! It was also good to hear him read his paper at the ohio valley history conference! Riveting! Controversal!! I loved IT!

I got an A. I thought this was an easy class. The tests are essay. He gives 3-4 essay ?'s you pick 2 and write a 4 pg paper over them. Not hard at all. The research paper isnt hard at all just follow chicago style and you will be ok. This was a boring class to sit through but he gives extra credit for missing 3 or less days.

Horrible! Unclear lectures. mumbles, barely understandable. harsh grader.. even if information is all correct if paper is not 2 pages you wont even get a C!!! not very accurate on his information either--says all blacks are republicans?!?!

His lectures were all over the place! He seemed to prefer to talk about Bush, the war in Iraq, and current events rather than past history. I would not suggest this professor. I do have to say that he is a funny guy, but he's not supposed to be teaching comedy.

Good funny teacher. Take notes pay attention in class and go to the textbook website and look up the summarizations for the chapters instead of getting overwhelmed by the material. When u write an essay for his test make sure it is at LEAST 3 pages in length or he wont even grade it.
