Comment:
David Hopes is a very easy teacher if you just go to lectures and pay attention. It's really fairly casual, like listening to a podcast. a lot of A-type students get panicky about that. But it's just three exams and two papers and all of them are easy if you are just present and attentive at the lectures. Use your brain and your heart.

Hopes is knowledgable, but had no plan for his Intro to Lit class. He lectured about whatever he wanted to in class and never told us what would be on tests. Doesn't give number grades on writing assignments, so I have no idea where I am in the class. He's opinionated, but acknowledges it. If you want structure, he's not the professor for you.

DO NOT TAKE HIM!!!! He is funny and passionate but theres no structure at all. I feel like I haven't learned anything for an intro to lit class. Doesn't help, tests aren't based on lectures or readings. He "forgets" things he says, so he includes things you haven't gone over or changes dates. RUN. do not take him if you need structure.

Comment:
Not suitable for an intro class. He is so knowledgeable that he just rants on and on about his knowledge so fast that you can't write anything down. WAY too much reading. Doesn't offer much help. Tests are hard and cover things he may have only mentioned once very vaguely. If you would like to maintain sanity, please avoid Hopes.

Professor Hopes is a bit vague in his directions and sometimes his ID tags are difficult on tests. However, he is very funny and interesting to listen to. I enjoyed his class a lot even though I am not a fan of history. He does make you work but he won't fail you.

Is he hilarious? Yes. Is he interesting to listen to? Definitely. But will you get anything out of him for the course? Absolutely not. A lot of people were struggling to understand what we needed to know and when we brought it to his attention, he was completely unreasonable and childish. Refuses to give notes, just rambles on. No respect for him.

Comment:
Prof. Hopes's lectures on drama were hilarious and well-informed, though sometimes it was hard to follow as there were many tangents when he asked for class input. Tests felt arbitrary and forced. Would probably not have taken the course if I had known we would be required to do some acting, but I ended up enjoying those assignments in the end.

One of the best professors I've had. He really cares about his students, wants to help, and makes class interesting. He is one of the professors that really enjoys about what he does.

Hopes is what you make of him. Class was based on reading discussions, so it's best to read. There were two essays and three exams, but the exams aren't bad. He includes questions that are interesting and creative, and occasionally asks the class for suggestions. If you pay attention, do the reading, and don't mind his tangents, Hopes is great.

Dr. Hopes is a very interesting character. He will make you laugh. Some days his lectures are amazing, other days they are horrible. He puts his opinions into things way too much sometimes. A few times his opinions obstructed us from learning the actual fact. As I said, it really just depends on the topic that day.

Hopes is awesome. Pay attention in class, ask questions, demonstrate any level of interest in the subject and it will all pay off. Also helps if you're not a closed minded student better off at Western.

Don't be fooled by his charismatic displays in front of the classroom and his obvious intelligence; Dr. Hopes is by far the worst professor I have had. He provided no helpful feedback, in fact I'm sure he didn't read my exams or papers, and was continuously disorganized and unclear. I worked hard for nothing but lazy, arbitrary grading. Steer clear

Dr. Hope's fiction class was pretty inspiring. He has a lighter teaching method than many of the other creative writing professors at UNCA. He does tend to be brutally honest. This class was fun and insanely easy.

Though a harder grader than many, and not very organized, he knew his subject better than many other professors, and seemed genuinely excited about the subject, and I looked forward to attending class. Unlike other humanities courses I have taken, we actually stayed on subject. If you just want a good grade look elsewhere, but I'd recommend him.

Very mixed bag, very polarizing. Love or hate. Will have long, in depth discussions in class and then grade your paper as if you were a tenth grader. Or sometimes the opposite. Very hard to predict.

If you want to simply pass with a C then take his class over the summer. If you want a higher grade then get another professor. Grade based on 4 tests and 1 presentation. Tests are heavily essay and subjectively graded. People with 4 essays on 1 page get a C as do the ones on 5 pages. Grades of A, B, or D used for variety, average remains C.

Hopes is quite possibly one of the worst profs at UNCA. He will not meet with you outside of class to discuss your grade even if the class is part of your major. He does not give adequate feedback on your assignments. He did not give clear instruction on our major paper until two-days before it was due and after I had already completed it.

Hopes is pretentious and rude. He calls students out for no reason, other than sheer enjoyment of embarssement. He is not helpful about what to expect on tests or on papers. We don't think he even reads the papers we turn in. He is lazy and often late, and i'm embarassed that he is a teacher at unca.

I had Dr. Hopes a number of years ago... no Professor has ever lived up to him! He's fantastic. I could listen to him read poetry for days. Very supportive, if you ask for help.
