Comment:

Pr. Lowy's courses are very interesting but they are difficult. If you are not prepared to do the work you will not succeed in the class. She is super nice and always willing to help. Her classes are never boring, she arguably has the best lectures and class discussions in the entire history dept. Make sure you work hard on your paper.

Comment:

very very fair, but also very tough. If you show up and show interest she will like you. If you are frequently late or not handing things in, it will affect your grade. She is always accessible and more than willing to help. If you are passionate about the subject the readings and lectures should be enjoyable!

So. Much. Busy. Work. Lowy is a nice lady, mom-type w sensitive feelings. Her lectures were boring, repetitive, and discussions were off-topic. She barely knew what was going on. It was a joke. I faked my way through this class: never did any reading, rarely showed on time, and turned half the assignments in late. Learning tea ceremony was cool.

Comment:

I love Dr. Lowy! She's an inspiration to aspiring female historians and is very personable. I recommend her classes to everyone I know! She is also really understanding that you have a life outside the classroom, but she doesn't take unreasonable excuses from people.

Class is pretty boring, but attendance is mandatory. She also grades papers harshly and does not tell you why she takes points off. She brought down all of my friends' GPAs'. Would avoid if possible.

She lacks a degree in Chinese History, yet she is the only professor that teaches those classes. Do not try to correct her in class or dissent from her opinion, it will only frustrate her.

She rambles in class and when pressed for specific details, is often unable to provide them. I have seen her embarrassed by Chinese students who corrected her one too many times. My advice is, if you have a particular question, ask it to her after class or in her office. She may even give you bonus points for it.

Professor Lowy is a really great teacher. Her class was very interesting and I learned a lot. Its very hard to get an A on her papers but her tests were reasonable. Lots of required reading which can be a little overwhelming.

Professor Lowy definitely is a very tough grader but she cares which is extremely important. She wants to make sure you get something out of the class.

Much of what was discussed in this class could be picked up in a 100-level class, but she demands much more on exams, so do the readings and try to stay awake in class. Asking her questions, which you probably won't have to do very often, is like talking to a politician, she'll talk a lot, but say nothing. I still did well in the class though.

As far as this particular class goes, I was a little put off by the style. All classes were discussions, with little direction of how to take notes, yet here exams were still similar to that of lecture courses. As a professor, Lowy really cares about one's progress in the classroom and will help you if you request it.

Lowy is the consummately fair professor. Her door is always open and she works overtime to help you produce good work. In other words, she actually teaches you how to be better at what you're interested in!

Prof Lowy is very cool. Her lectures can get a little boring, but so can everyone's after an hour and 15 minutes. Her lectures are straightforward and directly from the textbooks, but she's incredibly harsh in grading essays, research papers, and essay tests. She's a great professor, but be prepared to have your writing torn apart if you take her.
