Shoots down students' opinions if they are not the same as her own. Gets angry when asking clarifying questions. Almost got my first C EVER. If you're looking for a kind and helpful teacher, look somewhere else.

Comment:
Doesn't let you leave to use the bathroom. Comes off as extremely unprofessional in e-mails and doesn't even punctuate or capitalize, despite being a Comparative Literature professor. Chastises students for asking clarifying questions about midterms and exams, and is not understanding at all. Is not a friendly or approachable professor.

Does not explain lecture material well or what she wants in essays. Ignores students who don't give the right answers. Always seems bitter about something and gets upset when you want to schedule extra office hours. Just not a warm lady and not suited for teaching freshmen. Stay away.

Comment:
The workload is reasonable, mostly just reading required for lecture. She doesn't remember what she has (or in most cases HAS NOT) told you and will blame you for it. She can be incredibly rude and tends to shoot down students' comments (though maybe not on purpose?). She is not an easy professor. Beware!

If you want a challenge, take al-kassim. you'll learn a lot and have fun doing it. If you're looking for an easy A, steer clear. She's brilliant, but "definitely not for the weak." Yes, she's compassionate but has little patience for crappy answers. Personally, I fell in love with her class after I got used to her personality. highly recommended!

She has a wealth of knowledge and is very entertaining to listen to. However, at times she is a bit scatterbrained and will forget to do what she set out to do. Average grader, but sometimes she marks you off for seemingly pointless things. Very warm at times, yet cold on some days, too. Overall, though, I enjoyed her class.

...is an excellent professor. Her discussions and ideas are always fascinating. Like someone said in class, could listen to her lecture all the time. Personality could get a little getting used to. Confused at times at her friendliness and then coldness. Highly recommended especially for the overachievers. Will definitely learn a lot from her

I really didn't know much about Science Fiction Literature but thought it would be an interesting course. Boy was I right! Most of the students were guys that are fond of (understatement) obscure science fiction writing. It was hard to keep up with what they were suggesting at times, but the professor made all of her points very clear. Two papers

Anyone intersted in going to grad school in the humanities, esp. literature, should take Al-Kassim. The readings are tough and the schedule demanding, but this is a good preview for grad school. Learned to read more analytically. Also, to be more scholarly. Definitely hard prof, but one of a kind.

Al-Kassim takes her teaching seriously. Students did well in her classes & actually learned something were those who finished their assignments honestly w/o taking short cuts, minded her instructions, & took the courage to come to her for help. Those came to class expecting "easy A" & thought that their opinion is above all didn't fare too well.

The professor did not seem to respect my voiced opinion, and comments were scarce on my written work. Would avoid taking her again, I felt as if it was more indoctrination than open discussion.

She is indeed hard, but really makes her students interested in the subject. I always felt like my immediate reaction was respected but challenge, forcing me to examine my own perspective.

At times I found the class frustrating and felt that questions I asked were treated as outsider viewpoints I had to defend, but office hours were very helpful in gaining some much-needed understanding of the professor's expectations.

Clearly all the commnets are in agreement. Dina is a hard professor. On the other hand, if you care about what she is teaching and are willing to put in a lot of effort, she has brillant things to say. She is also willing to keep explaining things.
