Has a 10 page document of requirements for your code. Some of the items do not seem useful, but others I can see. Something due every class. I think most of his intentions were good, but it was very different from what the students were used to. Good lecturer and had good notes. HW requirements were unclear. Play his game, you will pass.

Awesome Professor and Lecturer! Ignore all the whiners who say bad things about Doug; they probably just don't work hard enough and everyone just jumps on the bandwagon. If you're looking for Professor to LEARN, take Doug! Learn, work hard, and you will get that A!

-terrible professor, will ruin your grade. Not at all intresting. Provides very vague instructions and take off points. Just a horrible horrible professor that no one in our class liked.

He a nice lecturer but doesn't have top-of-the line teaching skills. He throws out what he knows and expects students to grasp everything in a single sitting and then do homework right after that. Take him if he changes his teaching style.

His lectures are good but he is a tough grader. He is not clear on his grading format and takes off huge amount of points for small things. He gave me 60% on a exam problem because proof was not in a straight line rather slightly slanted.

If you are at all interested, DON'T take this teacher. Although he is a excellent lecturer, knows the material, will slash you to pieces over the smallest mistakes. Example, on his assignment he wrote "please conserve paper" I wrote 2 problems next to each other he gave me a 0/10 for each because, though correct, they weren't placed linearly.

He has a 14 section long, with subsections, set of guidelines to follow when formatting your code. They requirements are absurd and don't conform to usual conventions. Ex: I once handed in an assignment that was perfect except for one definition comment next to a variable. Literally nothing else was marked wrong. He gave me a 20% on that assignment

Doug's a fantastic lecturer. Really, the layout is well planned and you will learn a lot. However be prepared for punishing tests which focus much more on minor details than overall concepts. (Have you ever gotten a 0 on a 15 point problem for indenting incorrectly?) And this semester the syllabus was changed drastically half way though the course.

Comment:
He is a great lecturer in terms of concepts. However, the grading and feedback from the instructor tend to revolve around the arbitrary and inconsequential details that are omitted in lecture, and not the material itself. He will also change his grading decisions at the time of grading based on his current mood and feelings towards students.

Doug Hogan is a great professor. If you want to pass his class though, you have to be a great student. His tests are difficult, there is a lot of work (bc of a lot of information) but he is always there to help by email or during office hours. Be ready to see a lot of bad grades on assignments but if you correct your mistakes, you'll be fine.

Great professor, awful human being. If Doug actually cared about CS students learning proper mathematical writing he would lay out clear guidelines in text rather than having students failing tests and formal problems until they figure it out.

I would never take him ever again. He changed everything about course in middle due to his own mistakes and then it just made the class impossible. Also he is very partial to certain students vs everyone else.

He is very good at teaching, his lectures are crystal clear. However, his grading system is just crazy. Be prepared to go at least twice a week for OHs, get Ds in most assignments (You don't loose points you "earn them"), get frustrated and still fail the exams.

Be prepared to take this class again if you are taking it with him. Its more like an english language class. Doug knows how to teach but is a pathetic grader. He thinks all the students are enrolled only in his class and have nothing else to do.

If you are taking it with him, you've already heard how he is. And all I have to say about him and his ways of grading is "nonsense". His teaching skills are garbage when it comes to unfair grading pointing out where you left white space, and extra comma etc. Take his class if you wanna just give up hope.

Doug will teach you everything you need to know and teach it very well, but his grading scale is absolutely ridiculous and he gives no mercy for late work, even if your excuse is valid. Labs are graded like english papers and one small mistake will put you in the C range. Take his class, drop it, and take it again next semester with his notes.

Avoids case-by-case arbitration on everything by constructing elaborate rules for grading, attendance, extra credit, etc. To compensate for low grades he offers extra credit opportunities that, though they may help your grade, will use up all of your time. He is always available to help, but expects you to rise to his freakish level of dedication.

Never take any class with Doug Hogan! If you consider yourself to have an above average intelligence, then you'll learn nothing from him, he'll just waste your time and pick on your lamest grammar mistakes. He is a great professor for those who need special hand holding at all times.
