I got a kick out of this lady. I only took this class b/c I signed up late, classes were closing up, and I settled for knocking out a few random humanities credits. To my surprise, I really enjoyed the course. Eiko Chatel was also a part of the history she teaches, having been a little girl in Japan when the emperor renounced his divinity.

DO NOT take this class! Was actually interested in leaning abt Japanese culture but Prof. Chatel just shows a bunch of old documentary then leaves the class. E1 falls asleep or sneaks out in the middle. No lecture (reads fr PPT), no discussion, no presentation. Take Prof. Ketenchian. I heard his class is awesome.

If you take humanities 20 you better have some prior interest in Japanese culture. The textbook is helpful but make sure to take notes. Prof. Chatel gives reviews before every quiz that cover exactly what will be on them. The most annoying part is watching those old videos. This is an easy A course as long as you put effort into it.

Professor Chatel's Humanities 20 was one of the most interesting and easiest class I ever took. I learned so much about Japanese culture. She gives you the quiz and final exam questions beforehand. You don't even need to buy the book; the only page you need is pg. 351. All the answers are in her lectures. Take her class!

Overall, the class was okay and dull. She will expect you to do things her way even though it is said otherwise on the class syllabus. For an example, the comments you write for the the videos will not be your comments, it will be her comments since she is grading them. She expects you to comment the videos in her point of view.

Chatel Sensei was the greatest professor I've ever had. She took our class from L.A.C.C. to Tokyo, Japan for a month in the summer of 1991 and my life has never been the same since. Study harder than you think you can, and I promise it will be worth it. Ganbarimashoo!

Professor Chatel's humanities class is very entertaining. If you take notes from her powerpoint presentations you will ace every quiz she gives. Just repeat the answers she gives. She also gives handouts with the questions that will be on the quizzes. You will have to write 1 page papers on movies she shows every week. The class is easy and fun.

There was no speaking in this bad conversation class. She made us memorize difficult passages from the book along with numerous kanji. Me and my friend got the almost the same exact score on everything(even missed the same test). I got a 'C' while she got an 'A' She made us come on a non-class day to give us papers on what will be on the next test

Hard to understand her. Most of the materials from the test is from the textbook. Studied and worked hard in this class and still only got a C+. Not really a good teacher. I recomend you to drop this class before its too late.

This class is super easy.You have to be there or have your buddy sign the attendence sheet for you. Gives out study guide and answers are there for you from the slides. You watch video once or twice a week, and it could be boring or interesting. Highly recommended class.

A great teacher and a super lady, teaching 3 classes in a row while being chair of the foreign language department. In J3 we were a bit behind, and she helped us all catch up. She's a bit older than other Japanese teachers such as Takemori, so she seems to know a different view of Japanese culture than everyone else.
