Accused me of plagiarism once, without any proof. That should really sum it up(ended up getting a B on a paper he told me was "worth an A if it weren't plagiarized") definitely not recommended

I took Dr. Newberry's class at the University of Oregon. I loved it. Why they let him go is beyond me. I was in the midst of taking upper-division/grad biology courses but wanted a break. He's an excellent, engaging lecturer. And he didn't assign papers, thank God (that's why I studied science), but gave intense essay exams. Highly recommended.

Newberry will challenge you to be the best writer you can be and to really delve into American literature. His courses aren't easy, so be prepared to work. If you're not an English major, avoid his class. He does tend to have favorites, but accusations of sexism are false. As a female student who dresses modestly, I've always done well his classes.

You can tell he's a good guy, but he is not clear about what he wants in essays. Even when I followed all of his suggestions and sought outside help for one of my revision, I still got a C. He also did not make himself available for his students at all. I read all of the assignments and couldn't even get close to an A. A very frustrating class.

I had him for American Lit I. I do NOT recommend his class. His tests are easy but grades papers as if all students are professional writers. If you do not absolutely LOVE lit you will hate this class. I got absolutely nothing out of it and dreaded going to class.

A great, great guy. I had him for American Literature I, then again for American Romanticism. He's so freakin' smart. Can I just point out that a lot of the posts with criticisms are rife with spelling/grammar errors? Was the problem really with him now?

Dr. Newberry is a jerk. Pure and simple. If you are an English Phd student that kisses his butt he will like you. But if you are just a regular, responsible student he has no use for you. He told one girl in front of the whold "You don't have what it takes to pass this class" Avoid him at all costs.

He is a good professor (a little intimidating) and gives detailed feed back on writing. You must be a very good writer to get an A. Tests aren't too bad, but grades hard on papers. Lectures can be interesting, but I wished the reading material wasn't so dull (a lot was religous Puritan stuff). Cool guy, encourages class discussion.

Very interesting class. Goes on tangents about farm equipment somewhat too often. Thinks every work of literature is about sex or women being opressed. However, he's a lot of fun.

If you want to read and learn about great American lit., take Newberry: this guy knows what he's talking about. Beware, if you act like an ass in class he'll call you out on it. If you're not serious about Amer. lit., avoid him.

High expectations and blunt with students who aren't measuring up. Learned a tremendous amount from him. Gives detailed feedback on writing, which is rare and remarkably refreshing.

Great prof. Knows what he's talking about and isn't afraid to call students out when then make moronic comments. Definitely need to study for the tests but they are fair and so is his grading. Willing to help. I too enjoy the western hat.

A great teacher but a tough grader. Since I write well, I did fine, but many do poorly on his papers. Funny and entertaining, though. If you're an English major or minor, he is worth the challenge. If you are not, take an easier course.

Okay...here I go. This man has got to be the worst teacher I have ever had. From day one he alienated students that asked questions and incurraged chuckling, thrived off it when someone asked a question he deemed to be silly. I will okay on his papers so that wasn̢۪t the issue...continued
