Very interesting character. He's old so don't expect much. He is UNREACHABLE through email outside of class. He doesn't stay on task during lectures and is very easily distracted. He is nice and is willing to work around your schedule but he has to know you participate or at least entertain his conversation.

He is very knowledgeable at first I thought I made a terrible mistake taking him but his classes ran so smooth and really he was great. I learned more than ever before in this class bc it was genuinely interesting. For sure you should take him.

Professor made this class a breeze. No need to buy a textbook because he posts all the readings beforehand. Although, he is not strict about attendance, trust me, you would not want to miss the class. He makes it so interesting and engaging. I learned so much in this class and thats just with showing up and participating. One final and one midterm.

He is one of the best professors I've had. He is very nice and very intelligent. He is always willing to help a student. The only minor problem I had with him, is that he takes forever to submit final grades. But other than that he's great.

Amazing professor. His knowledge is immense, he cares for his students and is passionate about his work. He is lenient, and doesn't take attendance. Allows students to re-write papers. Basically a great professor who understands that we are still undergrads.

Take it from someone who has taken all his classes as an undergrad - He is one of the best professors you'll come across at Brooklyn College. His knowledge is almost encyclopedic, while his personality is down-to-earth. I highly recommend him for anyone, especially if you're thinking about minoring/majoring in Africanna studies. A great mentor too!

Comment:

Finally a professor at Brooklyn College who can actually profess what they "profess". Among the few that actually can teach and offer new insight in the world of literature, especially the literature of black writers. This class is no joke so if you want to get the most of it make sure you have a few advanced courses on your transcript. Trust me!!!

Nice man but I didn't feel challenged enough. I felt that he never took me to that place that would make me think. At times I felt discouraged and upset by him. I also felt that he held back on many subjects that should have been explored more.

I have taken every class i could with this man. Just being in the same room as him makes me feel smarter somehow. His class is so casual that you actually learn by enjoying yourself. He treats you as an adult and isnt a stickler on attendance, but be warned he knows if you are there or not. and speak up, it makes a difference with him!

Nice guy, first time I had him. Pays more attention to the individual student than you assume. His testing style is great (ID's and essay). Wish he wouldn't let certain students overpower the discussions...that's my only complaint. Otherwise, great class!

Unbelievable Experience! Professor Cunningham is is no doubt an intellectual. You definitely have to step your game up when in his class though. He requires you to think, which is refreshing and challenging and ultimately life changing. He's insightful, and even very funny at times. I enjoyed his class and intend on taking another.
