A good lecturer who provides a lot of information about an interesting topic. Respects students, cancels class to provide time to write essays. Two 5 page papers and two 1 page reflections. Attendance is mandatory, but there are extra credit opportunities to make up missed classes. Assigns long readings each week, but they help with essay writing

She barely answers questions or listens to students. This was supposed to be a class on the Global History of WWII, but she only discussed the Pacific Theatre. She also managed to make WWII boring and would simply drop topics without picking them back up.

Hiromi never let the class know exactly what she expected from our papers. I found it extremely hard to deduce what content I should cover in my assignments and papers.

She is incredibly bright and really works with the kids to make sure that they succeed. She teaches you not only the material, but the skills needed to perform well in the class so if you listen and work hard, getting an A is not hard at all. Just be organized about the work and listen and engage in class.

This was a very interesting class that broadened by understanding and challenged my ideas about WWII. The class had ten guest lecturers; some were excellent, some were ok. I had to read the book and the many readings the guest lecturers assigned, in addition to a 10 page final paper and eight 500 word essays on each guest lecturer.

the class is very extensive for only 3 credits. you have a lot of readings and quizzes at the beginning of the semester that come to be pointless at the end of the semester. you have one major 10 page paper that they critique to the bone. the grading is very unclear where as she gave us the same exact grade for every assignment with no feedback

A lot of the class seems pretty unclear. It is vey challenging to give her an acceptable answer if called upon in class. Lectures feel really long some days and the papers can be confusing.

Her class was super interesting as we saw how the tradition of samurai was redefined over and over again in Japan and it made me realize that tradition was not something that is static and unchanging. She's also always there to help but you gotta do some thinking on your own too. Super great prof, great class! TAKE HER CLASS GUYS

I enjoyed the films that we watched in class, but the assignments were very tedious. There is too much reading involved for the 3 credits I was being granted. It felt like a 5 credit course, but the films were indeed fun to watch. If you're planning on taking her course, make sure you have plenty of time, because I worked two jobs and it was tough.

I was excited for this class originally, and was even enjoying it for the first two weeks. The problem with her lectures are that when she asks a question, no one can get it "right". As others have said, the lecture info is needed for her exams, and you usually get all of it the day before the exam is due. Would not recommend.

Very knowledgeable and an interesting lecturer, but a big class. Uses TAs for a lot of the grading. Guest lecturers are generally good, though there were a few that I didn't enjoy. A LOT OF READING, and frequent reflectino papers. Honestly, not all of the reading is necessary. Final paper was long and somewhat difficult, but not terrible.

Hard grader, assigns so much reading as to suggest that she thinks hers is the only class you're taking. Also worth noting that if you miss more than 3 or 4 classes, it's an automatic D for the course, so it won't count towards your major if you're a History major. Would not recommend.

Reflections on guest lectures two times a week are ok, but the final paper is very unorganized and she is a hard grader and doesnt explain her critiques she makes. Does not like to listen to other's opinions without giving her opinion before the person was done giving theirs. Disrespectful and would not recommend her to future students.

She is very helpful when justifying her grades on the weekly reflection essays we had, but some of the justifications did not seem...justified. Most of the time it's regurgitation of the articles we read for class, but I rather we analysis the articles in our reflection essays than regurgitate the information. Barely any time for discussion.

VERY approachable professor, honestly a fav. Materials accessible, and interesting. Really knows her stuff, so make sure to ask ?'s. Had to cover a lot of info, so rushed. Doesn't post slides, but willing to go over info again. Prompts were loaded, but good. If you are a hist major she is a must. Really expects and pushes you to think critically.A+

Comment:
Took Modern to Meiji: Japanese History. The paper guidelines and prompts were confusing and vague. There was little time given to actually write the 6 page papers since lecture covering what was needed for the paper usually ran up until the class right before due date. Also, her slides aren't posted and there's way too much info to write down.

You can take the class as 1000 or 3000 but graded the same way. Guidelines on assignments changed frequently in these classes. Syllabus changes throughout the semester that became agitating. Good person who knows her stuff, but the class was very disorganized.

I took the Global WWII class. The class itself is very interesting as they bring in many guest lectures. It was the first time they offered this class and you could tell Hiromi was unsure of some things. Sometimes felt like she didn't know what she wanted from the student and assignments were not always clear.

she talks very quietly, she is inconsistent in what she says she wants in projects and papers and is over all a frustrating professor.
