Oh THANK GAWD they retired this fossil! Responsible for so many students either changing majors, changing universities or dropping out. In 1995 you licked his a** and maybe got a C- or if you got A's on your papers , were flunked out. He was a power-mad Never Was who reveled in flunking poor kids out, actual journalism be damned.

The single best professor I ever had in five years of university study at two different universities. A grueling, frustrating, rewarding experience. I got more out of one class with Jake than all other J-school courses combined.

Do not take a class with Jake if you are not a print journalism major. You will get a C no matter how hard you work. This is well known.

I worked by butt off in this class. I was extremely interested in the course. I continuously asked for guidance on my continuous F's and he provided no meaningful or understandable input. I had people compare another students paper that got an "A" to my "F" and nobody could make sense of it. I agree and am disgusted my money is forced to go to him.

One of the best profs in the J-school. You probably won't get an A, but he'll make you actually work, a concept that seems to be foreign to some. This man is an irreplaceable asset of the J-school. Anyone who opts to take a different professor because he/she will be "easier" does not deserve a journalism degree. period. dot. end.

I took three classes from Jake while I was at UNR. Best teacher I ever had, when it comes to real-life information. I use what I learned from him every day of my NYC journalism career.

When a prof begins by saying he is 80% deaf and partially blind, drop it. Taking roll, Highton sometimes can't hear or see you, and drops you after 2 misses. Whether you didn't attend or the man couldn't see and hear you or forget to mark you there doesn't matter because Highton IS ALWAYS RIGHT. I'm disgusted my money is paying this man's salary.

Jake is impossible. He is a an awful teacher. Since he is 78 yrs old it is nearly impossible to understand him seeing that he rambles on forever. He is incomprehensible, has no grading system and if you do not write exactly in his style you are screwed. He says JOUR is not an exact art, but if it's not done his way, it shouldn't be done at all.

I highly recommend taking another professor for this course. He is not a "hard" teacher, his grading system just makes no sense.

Hardest teacher at UNR.......but you do learn the most. Just visit his office, tell him you need a B and he'll work it out with you as long as you show up. Otherwise take your C and be happy with it.

I don't know what everyone is talking about. Highton is one of the best and simultaneously hardest teachers at UNR. This is knowledge you all should be proud to be able to experience. Yes, he makes you work. Yes, he makes you realize your faults. He is one of the best this university can offer you.Just pay attention to his corrections.

With most teachers, you can figure out what grade you'll get after two or three assignments. I've had Jake twice now and never once had any clue what I'd get before I turned it in. Oh, and my favorite, he'll often gratuitously praise papers that get low, low f's. Outdated, confusing, arbitrary and insanely difficult with no known path to success.

Jake is not an easy grader but every he teaches is applicable to the real world of a newsroom. Avoid him if you want an easy A but take as many classes as you can if you really want to learn something.

Yes, Highton is probably one of the toughest teachers at UNR, but the experience and knowledge you gain from his class cannot be beat. He knows what he is doing...he's been doing it FOREVER. He will make you work your butt off, but only because he truly cares about his students' success.

hightons standards are extremely high, too high, and his grading is a bit off base. the only person to get above an 80 on the midterm was a math major, so that proves how much you need to know in writing for his class.

If you are looking to actually learn about and respect the First Amendment of the Constitution, take this class. He isn't an easy grader though, so getting an A is next to impossible. But the knowledge you gain is well-worth it.
