Excellent instructor. Out of the ordinary. She teaches organically not necessarily in linear fashion. If you go with the flow, this is will be an outstanding learning experience. If you insist on strictly academic processes (left-brain), you will be disappointed. This is a learning experience out of the ordinary!

Dr. Karen Holgerson has a doctorate in U.S.-Japanese foreign trade relations. You might think this involves a degree of expertise in economics, or fluency in Japanese. She has neither (paraphrase of her own words). The disconnect between these credentials and the subject matter is apparent. It is easy to do well, but you will learn very little.

She grades poorly, teaches the class poorly. She treats the class like a high school class. This class was by far one of the worse class ever. At first I loved the class then she suddenly snapped. She's a liar too.

Those people who are writing good things about her are on DRUGS! I am very disappointed to read that she plays favoritism with her students, because I feel the same way and the grading also shows her favoritism. She tells you to write in your journal about anything that is important to you just to give you a bad grade because it was not interesting

Comment:

The best class I have ever had. What an interesting, caring, and experienced person. She has changed my views on so many things -- yet I got to discover them on my own in the process of her unorthodox class. Lectures and boring academics are not what she is all about -- her subject is life, especially related to language,and culture!

So vibrant and full of energy.Dr. H shares her life and travel experiences to make for interesting class discussions. I absolutely enjoyed her class and learned a couple life lessons.

I thought this woman retired last spring! If she is currently teaching classes, don't take her. She is not worth fulfilling any desperate need for GE credit. In fact, you'll regret it. She plays favorites and functions with absolutely no direction, thus she does more harm to your college semester. She is incapable beyond words of being any help.

Her classes are strange and oddly disorganized. We mostly talk about her and her life. At times she looks and sound like she is losing it. I don't feel that I am getting much from the class, and that upsets me.

Extraordinarily gifted and committed educator! Dr. Holgerson knows her subject academically and personally inside and out. Passionate and enthusiastic about creating a learning environment conducive to intercultural understanding. Creative! Fun, and a real mentor for many.

If you like a class run like junior high homeroom, this is the one for you!! You will just fill a seat and learn nothing of real value. She plays favorites, is scatter-brained and does not have full command of the material. She does try hard, but that's not the same as executing well. Not even close. Best advice: stay away and take a different clas

While Karen Holgerson is certainly a kind and caring individual, she possesses none of the qualities one would look for in a professor. Her professionalism is lacking, her lectures are obscure and pointless, and she doesn't seem to grasp the material she assigns. An A is not difficult, but I did notice highly subjective grading.

Excellent, caring instsructor. Material from this Semester Abroad in florence, Italy class has been immensely valuable to me -- in spite of some very unruly classmates. Her approach is intuitive and addresses issues as they arose in the news and among members of our group.
