Comment:

Assigns 4 long papers either close reading or argumentative. 3 Group presentations. Grading criteria is given for projects and papers. In class participation is stressed but she is understanding if you miss. Disorganized so the syllabus is altered weekly. Overall a very sweet and quirky lady. Extremely available and is lenient with due dates.

Comment:

Cowan is a great English professor. She might be a hard grader, but that's because she wants you to succeed and she knows good writers when she sees them. Can be downright hilarious and politically incorrect sometimes too. But one negative about her is that she tends to get disorganized with due dates on the syllabus.

Very HORRIBLE woman. DON'T take her class, unless you want to feel terrible about yourself. I pulled a 'B', but I deserved an 'A', she grades based on whether she likes you or not, not on your skill or knowledge. I really don't know how she is a teacher at ANY school, let alone Cabrillo, which has mostly great professors.

Honestly, the worst teacher I have EVER had. She's rude to students, puts kids down the entire time, made 2 girls in my class cry. She has favorites!She literally was giving out the finals in my class and changed someones grade because she hadn't put their name to their face,that's INSANE favoritism! Comment:

Scowls, screams, pouts, especially to 'younger' students, whom she is sarcastic to.Thanks 'my old students.' Yells at new and 'young' (under 35)students,some of whom cried, pretended they were ok, cause they needed class. Kathy then explains why she 'appreciates my older students so much!' and makes social plans with them. Very clear here!

Two words....stop teaching. painful class. she is stubborn, rude, and disrespectful. she doesnt follow the syllabus and has too many "senior moments". i have never been so frustrated with an english teacher. the class assignments are boring and the essays are graded so that u cannot succeed in the class.never take this class.

My first couple impressions indicated Kathy was a neo-victorian prude; intolerant and ill-tempered. BUT, she loosened up and turned out to be a very sweet lady. Her lessons are a little unorganized and her aging memory is failing her, but if you can see past the crotchets, she can provide some insightful analysis of American culture

She was one of the worst teachers I've ever had. She raises her voice at people and it comes off at just yelling. She picks on random students for no reason, she makes **** remarks while explaining how she is anti-racism. Her class is not organized whatsoever, things are always changing. Good luck if you're not her favorite!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Raises her voice at students, talks about herself (not students) for hours, how she wants to write and maybe students will inspire her, leaves students in groups to 'critique' but does her own stuff w/out helping them...dropped due to boredom and lack of real teaching. 2 yrs ago, but believe she still is 'teaching' and doing same old stuff.

Kathy is the best English professor. She presents some of the most interesting of subject matter in a highly enlightened way. What I like best is that she recognizes good writers but also strives to bring those up who struggle with English. She is a remarkable person and an educatioal ally. She does not assume that you know nothing like many others

She is strict and does not tolerate a lot of crap. The subject for this class is pretty fun and easy to get. She says that attendance is mandatory but if you skip a class or two, it won't kill you.

Tougher than other Engl2 professors but so worth the work. A wonderful teacher and very familiar with the material. Open to letting students explore what interests them on the research papers. Also knows good writing and appreciates those who work hard, she can smell a slacker from a mile away. Very good teacher & class- def. take it with her.

This is not an easy course, she makes you work hard for a good grade. But, I've learned the most out of this English course than any other at Cabrillo. She keep you on your toes and honest, I recommend her if your up for the challenge!

i took her memoir writting class. she was nice to the older folks, but had a tendancy to be condecending to the few younger students (me). i have no aspirations to be a "writter," however i have always loved to write. This class did not help me to further embrase that love nor was it encouraging. not recommended unless you're 35yrs+

My first impression of Dr.Cowan was: "Wow, this lady is a B#$%." But I think that she just tries to scare the weak ones out of the class. She has a very humorous teaching style and will often pick-on the students in class, and use them in her jokes, but i think that if you can laugh about it, than you'll like her.
