He's very much of a "it's my way or no way" kind of professor and takes no excuses. He counted me absent for zoning out in class (I have ADD and he very well knows this because I turned in a whole paper about it so it's not like I would zone out on purpose. I CANNOT CONTROL IT) so now I have five absences after actually not attending class ONCE

He is tough grader but if you really take his feedback you will do great in his class. He really is great, as long as you show interest in the class and put in the work for your grade there will be no problem getting an A. He really cares about the success of his students.

Your whole grade is based off of the 5 papers you write in the class. If you want to pass his class, you must visit with him during office hours. He will mark you absent for being on your phone and doesn't hesitate to drop you after 5 absences. Communication with him is very important.

Comment:

Carroll is a tough professor to get along with. Instead of making constructive comments on papers, he makes condescending, belittling ones. He is very inconsistent with his grading. He says one thing when going over model papers during class, and then does the complete opposite when grading the students papers. I wouldnt recommend this course.

He wants perfection, sometimes at the price of creativity. Give him stock papers and he will be happy--just proofread them about a thousand times, andor get a tutor. Know the reading assignments. He is satisfied with the most shallow analysis, just so you are familiar with the content. He gives pop quizzes when participation lags, so beware.

He was the absolute worst teacher I have ever had. When asking a question he almost makes you feel stupid. He is a super tough grader. Told us that his failure rate is about 50% Almost impossible to get an A. He should be your last resort as and English Comp teacher.

Worst class I have ever taken. Grades like we are students that are working towards a PHD. He does not post grades either. I thought I was doing fine all semester till I received my transcript and I got a D. I even asked him my grades and he would tell me that I was doing fine. APPARENTLY NOT!!

Mr. Carroll is the kind of instructor who is very strict in the way things are done in assignments and in class, but he is strict for a reason. I took Intro to Lit to fulfill a degree requirement, having no interest in the subject at all. His class discussions make the stories interesting. You'll want a firm grasp of Comp I and II before taking Lit

Max is awesome! I can't recommend his classes to non-English majors, but if you love literature than you will enjoy his classes. He always wears a smile and an amazing personality, and though he demands much from his students, you will be fine as long as you pay attention and participate.

If you want to learn a lot, take this class. One of the most useful classes I took, but it did not come easy. I heard Mr. Carroll was hard and mean, but it just was not true. It was surprising how invested Max was in our education, he was always happy to help after class.. no matter how dumb the question seemed. Very challenging, very rewarding.

Mr. C is not the easiest teacher but you WILL learn from him. He is eay to talk to and very willing to help. You need to attend class and follow his step by step instructions. Best english professor ever!
