Comment:

Professor Emery did not give clear instruction about assignments or course goals. Her lectures are disorganized and draw from too many sources. Her exams are difficult as she expects you to memorize every small detail from every reading. I would not recommend taking any class with her.

Comment:

She is an incredible professor who is very passionate about French literature & culture. While her classes are difficult, if you put in the effort you will do very well. She went out her way to help me work out my credits after studying abroad, & is also very helpful when you go to office hours. Definitely one of my favorite professors and courses!

Comment:

Incredibly knowledgable about French literature and really cares about the material and so is not looking for anyone to BS it. Cares about attendance and it's kind of a rigorous class but she's always there to help and really just wants you to show interest.

I had her for a senior seminar and it was terrible. We were always confused by the assignments and what we did in class made no sense. She's really nice outside of class and she tries to help. But she made it difficult to like the class and to get a good grade.

Worst. Advisor. In the department. Super unhelpful, did not offer any good or constructive advice, essentially made fun of me for having my act together and asked why I was even there. Totally useless. Switched advisors the day after my meeting with her.

Comment:

This is a class where you HAVE to put in effort. You're learning in-depth about French society, taught entirely in French. Doing all the reading and more importantly understanding what you are reading is a must. The other review is a little harsh; in class Emery discusses what was read and answers questions. Again: do the reading, take notes.

Comment:

Teaches so directly from the book that going to class is rendered useless. Class is spent going over the homework (of which there is a lot) and not teaching anything new. Exam formats were very confusing, required minute memorization and excellent grasp of French to even pass. Entire class was disorganized. Impersonal and not helpful as a teacher.

a really hard grader who expects a lot out of her students. she's very willing to help you if you ask her, but i wouldn't advise taking her for upper level french. she runs a tight ship. a tight french ship.

extremely intelligent in her subject (and probably in most others), makes the class enjoyable because of her enthusiasm. Speaks slowly for the students, which can get annoying, and which makes it hard to focus...lots of quizzes, but they're not bad. the material can get boring, though.
