Good teacher who explains clearly, just take good notes. Requires you to watch 16 hours of jazz shows or movies(or listen to 16 hrs of music), 2 concert reviews and a book report. Do it ahead of time or you won't do well. Some movies can be found on Youtube. My biggest tip: take the class with a friend or make a friend to copy notes from for tests.

Do your homework ahead of time and don't procrastinate. It is worth a third of your entire grade. He only has two tests, a final and a mid term. Each test is also worth a third of your grade. Study his worksheets and you will get an A. Don't study and you will fail. He is very knowledgeable but tends to digress a bit. Show up to class.

Such a great teacher. Very knowledgeable and explains everything clearly. Not much need of the textbook, midterm and final are primarily on his lectures. Purchase your worksheets for $1.80. Two concerts reviews, music video log, and your worksheets are mandatory and due by final. Book review and a 10 min presentation for extra credit.

Mr. Farrington is the BEST teacher I have had at De Anza! He doesn't take attendance after the 2nd week. Gives plenty of xtra credit assignments that are worth a good chunk of points. Attend 2 live concerts and write reports on them. Keep a log of youtube music videos or documentaries or bio pics of music artists. One midterm and one final.AWESOME!

He is a very good humble professor. Doesn't have an ego despite the fact he is extremely musically talented. His lectures are long and tests are somewhat challenging but as long as you show up and listen you will pass. You'll learn alot.

Farrington is a great proffessor. His test are really easy. He grades them on a curve and all you have to do is study worksheets that he hands out in class. He only has 2 test, a midterm and a final. Each one is worth 1/3 of your grade and homework is worth another 1/3. Taking his jazz class helped increase my appreciation of that genre! :)

Farrington can put you to sleep sometimes. He plays good music in class, but listening to music is sometimes all you do. As long as you attend class and take notes, you'll do well on the tests, he curves it. Sometimes personal bias appears on the test, and that's annoying. Decent class, alright teacher, if you like Rock music you'll survive.

Really enthusiastic teacher! His class is hard, so you have to pay attention and read the book. But he gives extra credit points and is generous with grading. If you participate in class and ask questions you're sure to get a good grade.

Everything that is going to be on the tests are on the worksheets he give out. If you stay in class and just fill out the worksheets you can easily get a good grade. He also grade on a curve and gives out bunch of extra credit, so even if you do bad at a test you can make it up with extra credits. The teacher is very passionate about the subject!

I'm sure he's a nice guy, as most of you have been saying. However, unless the tests are on his personal history, I'm going to fail. I'm enrolled in another course currently and have a full book of notes after just 3 meetings. None for Mr. Farrington's class. He never says anything worth writing down. All he does is play sax poorly, and piano worse

Everything on the exams is in the lectures. He gives you a worksheet, which is used for taking notes. When the exams come, you simply study the sheet. He required that you watch jazz movies, and write reviews on them. He goes pretty soft on grading. Very easy class, and he's an okay guy. I don't like jazz, so I thought the lectures were boring.

I am taking the Jazz improvisation class. After years of struggling, it finally all makes sense. He is an extremely helpful guide to the world of jazz improvisation. He makes concepts clear and gives just the right nudge. I'm very grateful that he is teaching this class.

GREAT CLASS! We listen to a lot of good music. He gives u all the work in the beginning & u must complete it by the final. He only takes attendance in the beginning of the quarter then its up to u. Go to class or read the book (I recommend going) and u will be fine. Do the extra credit!!

Good, nice teacher. If you pay attention and do your homework, it's not too hard. He definitely does get off track and talk about boring stuff that is irrelevant to the class sometimes. Also, he doesn't know the best way to teach a different way so everyone can understand so sometimes you have to teach yourself at home. Overall, a good class.

Robert has truly impacted me and opened my eyes to jazz and REAL music. His class is not one of those pathetic super-simple easy-A classes, but he does grade on a lower curve, offer complete study guides that mimic the exams, and even gives you credit for answers that you've erased. He's extremely passionate, knowledgable and understanding.

Don't take this class unless you have a history and serious PASSION for jazz. The midterm and final are ridiculously difficult. He is a very nice person, but its difficult to impress him. He is pretty easy on attendance, not so much on grading.

This was a Music Theory intro class. While Robert teaches music for many years, he was amazing!!! He was enthuhsiastic, very carrying and explained maaterials with simplicity and clarity! He was able to connect years of bits of informatin we all have and make sense out of it. Intro classes are hard to predict but Robert left a "want more" taste in

I loved jazz before but I have an even greater appreciation now. Bob's stories (some personal) about the musicians were the best part. Bob loves what he does and that makes a big difference. Since he really wants you to learn, his tests are not multiple choice or true or false, but don't let that scare you. You'll remember what you learn.
