Comment:
Professor Bates is the best! I had him for my seminar freshman year and also a lit in history class and both were awesome! He invests a lot of time into his students and loves when students get personally invested in books. Also, if you're really legit you might earn a spot on his blog. But in all honesty, if you can, take one of his classes.

Prof. Bates was my favorite professor freshman year. He was incredibly knowledgeable about Jane Austen and her works and our core class was exciting and thought provoking every day. Wrote a paper after finishing each book (6 in total), one longer final paper, and two presentations. Highly highly recommend him!

Comment:
Bates is super friendly and has an obvious passion for early literature. He definitely has a soft spot for tying in personal stories with whatever we're reading, and has his own ideas about certain topics, which can make it hard to write essays for him, but overall it was a great learning experience.

Likes to talk about one's feelings more than true literary analysis. Easy class if you have no qualms with creating fictionalized sob stories about your life in essays.

Professor Bates is the most adorably awkward professor I've had. He is very knowledgeable and tries really hard to relate class material to our own familiar life experiences. Dicussion is likely to go off on tangents. Take him if you can!

Professor Bates is a wonderful literature and film professor. His level of knowledge in his field is spectacular. He is genuinely a person you want to shoot the breeze with even after class. You don't want to miss any of his classes. He comes prepared and ready to go. If you slack off, he may give you a second chance, but that's it!

Solid, encyclopedic knowledge of literature, and very passionate about the subject. Personable, friendly, chipper, open to all ideas. He knows his stuff. Somehow less open to more avant-garde literature, such as James Joyce. Beneath chipper exterior, though, is a brittle and sarcastic anger. Stay on his good side.

He has an idea of what he wants you to do and you have to do it his way. His comments are less than helpful on creative projects and his grading system is based on arbitary things like length and not the quality of the piece.

I had Bates for Brit Lit, Film, & SMP. I loved all of those classes and got to know him really well for SMP. I didn't think he was a tough grader, but a tough prof b/c he did encourage revising papers to make them better, so you did improve your writing.

Professor Bates is awesome. As a graduated English major, I've had a few classes with him and always enjoyed him. If you can, take a class that features Chaucer, Beowulf, or other old old English lit and have him read exerpts in the original language!
