I was UMM from 96 to 99 and think I took everything he offered, which is what I do when I find a great prof. Did the same with the late Prof. Don Marshall at the U of Minn. Law School. They makemade good use of the Socratic method.

So kind and freaky smart. Really teaches to better you and your education- not just teaches to get a good grade on the test. Fairly easy grader but you have to know like 70 people for tests and he asks 5 of them, essay questions on test are tough, but not impossible Lectures are ALWAYS interesting. A ton of reading but it's all pretty interesting.

Really nice guy. Fun to listen to, amazing how much history he knows. Took his American Immigration class for my history gen ed, and as I'm not a big history person, was kind of dreading the class. But I really did learn a lot and appreciate history and am interested in it a lot more now because of having taken that class.

Very kind, and SUPER SMART, guy. He is always willing to meet outside of class and he is a walking encyclopedia. His lectures were very interesting, although he tended to go off into stories he remembered off of the top of his head. But all in all a very good professor. Just keep up on the reading!!

The 8 books you have to read for the class don't ever come up in lecture. The lecture consists of random facts and stories he remembers on the spot. A major waste of time for a gen ed.

Comment:
A nice guy, but a horrible lecturer. Lectures and readings have almost no overlap (this is intentional on his part), making for 2X the work of most classes. Lectures are completely unstructurd and usually consist of random stories that come to Roland's mind. Roland only teaches 2 days/week, leaving Fridays to TAs (not even making an appearance!).

For a Hist major he quite interesting. For a none history major he may seem boreing. He is a nice guy and if you take a Gen Ed with and you do poorly and make an honest effort and improve and do his Extra credit you will pass. Brings alot to the table

Let's put it this way, when I started the class, nothing about the 1890's interested me . . . nothing. I left very excited about that period in history and begging Roland to be my prof. for directed studies. Amazing.
