The trickiest class I have ever taken in my life, I think. The papers are incredibly open-ended which is both awesome and hard because I was never too sure what he was looking for. Attend office hours for clarification EARLY and write down his lectures verbatim. The last unit of his lectures are invaluable for real life; take his class for that

Currently in his philosophy & lit class & majority of people enrolled are failing. Grades papers harshly but you can redo them as many times as you want up until a certain deadline. Your entire grade is the 5 papers. Going to class is vital because the papers are basically write ups of his lectures combined with material from the readings.

The only rate my professor I will ever write. It is because this guy deserved it. I'm saving my upper division phil class just so I have a chance to have him again. that is all.

It's not a hard class, but it is obnoxious. You can get an A, but it is not easy. He's willing to help- to a degree. I honestly hated this class. He's a great guy, but a terrible professor. Don't take.

This is a very interesting class and will challenge your thinking a lot. There is never a boring day in class. However, you do have to put in the work to get an A. Your fingers will be cramped by the end of every class. DO NOT procrastinate on your essays or you will deeply regret it. And don't buy the book.

This class is so easy! Attendance not mandatory but you need to go to every class. Bring your computer, type out everything he says, & then turn it into a paper. As long as you don't fall behind, you just need to dedicate max 45 mins of time a week to his class. He's funny & his lectures are interesting. Don't buy the book! Easy A w/ little effort!

Oh the gremlin they call Schlesinger... 1. If you can't write papers, don't take him. His class is LITERALLY just take notes in class and spit it onto a paper. 2. DON'T BUY THE BOOK. love it. 3. Start writing your papers immediately, you'll get an A. 4. Most interesting class I ever taken, it makes you think/rethink a lot about society.

Let this be clear: this class is a guaranteed A, but not an easy A. You end up writing about 65-70 pages over the course of the semester, but it's really not that bad. He's just another liberal philosophy professor who hates capitalism/religion/any opinions that are different than his own. To get an A, just tell him what he wants to hear.

Very interesting class, but an extremely harsh grader. If you don't type out exactly every word he says, he will dock a lot off your grade. He made me feel like an idiot when I came in to ask for help. It's a shame because he had a lot of interesting things to say, but the constricted grading on the papers made me hate this class.

THE greatest professor at USD. Take him for both Philosophy and Ethics and get ready to understand the world. Incredible lectures that will leave you in awe every single class. Get smarter and learn to think with Schlesinger. Out of this world and not difficult. He is the only professor you should not miss out on.

first off DO NOT buy the book. seriously dont. This was without a doubt the most interesting class I have ever had in my life and i actually liked going. No homework or tests-EVER. The class is hard work, but if you type up your notes every night and turn them in immeaditley, you will get nothing less than an A. be disciplined and do it, A for sure

Best teacher at USD. You must attend every class but that guarantees you an A. Your whole grade is based on 4 papers that you can turn in as many times as you want until you get an A. No final or midterms. He is a very cool guy, makes class interesting.

Probably on THE BEST classes I have taken so far, though I am a freshman, Steve makes lectures interesting by telling how it is. There are 4 papers that you can rewrite as many times as you want, so rewrite them often till you get an A, but this class is amazing. TAKE IT you'll learn a lot more about the world.

Everyone who is saying that Schlesinger's class is hard is either really lazy or really stupid. The class was so interesting, there are no exams, just four papers that he basically writes for you. Just type his lecture word for word and turn it into essay form. Guaranteed A. Such a cool guy.

Most amazing professor. He actually tells you what has happened in the world if your tired of hearing all the bs and coverups. If you spend 30 min after every class and type your notes and turn them in as much as possible. GUARANTEED and A!!!! Take him hes amazing and not hard.

Awesome teacher. Easy to tell that he is extremely interested in the subject. Each lecture was interesting, so I looked forward to every class. One of the most compelling classes I have ever taken, and I learned a ton. His class is simply writing 4 papers, and you can use a laptop in class...very easy if you can listen and type at the same time.

This was the worst class I have taken at USD. When I signed up for this Intro to Philosophy class, I expected that I would learn a little bit about philosophy during the course of my semester. However, I guess that was too much to expect from Schlesinger. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. He talks at the speed of light about history and conspiracy theories:(

Everything I have to say about this teacher has been previously said. It is an extremely hard class and I HIGHLY recommend any rational student to take a phil clas with someone else. If I could do my semester over again, I would drop it, or take a "W." This class consists of formal papers which are graded very, very hard!!

I think this was the most ridiculous 101 class I have ever taken. You must from the beginning type your notes in essay form. It will make the class so much easy for you. 4 essays, my last essay was about 45 pages long. You have to have the same thoughts as him to get a good grade. I was shocked to see that I got a B in his class.
