Scott Zane Smith is by far the best professor I've had at JMU. He cares for everyone and makes sure everyone has a good knowledge of the material. He makes learning theory easy, and he's always readily available to answer any questions. If you have the opportunity to have him as a professor TAKE HIM. You won't regret it.

Comment:

Scott Zane Smith is one of the most amazing professors at JMU. He's extremely positive, clear and helpful. This class was a total break from my lecture-filled day and I would take it again in a heartbeat. DEFINITELY take if you have the chance. Its a bit of work, but totally worth the experience.

Scott is my favorite professor at JMU. If I could spend every day in his class I would. I came into the class very uncomfortable with Music Theory and he makes sure everyone in the class understands the information and is engaged in the discussion. He will call on you to keep you engaged but he tries not to put you on the spot. Take this class!!

If you're taking theory, you HAVE to take it with Scott- he's the absolute best! He's so understanding and kind and patient and he WANTS to help students that are struggling. He also wants to be there for his students even after they're no longer in his classes. Great professor, even better person.

TAKE SCOTT! YOU HAVE TO. He makes theory SO EASY when theory is not an easy subject. He lays it out very clearly for you and makes it very easy to understand. I love the way he grades quizzes and exams!

Scott is great! Makes sure everyone is keeping up by asking questions the whole lecture. Funny. Amazingly organized syllabus; it gives the topics of all the assignments (11, lowest dropped) and quizzes (8, 1 dropped), and the dates. 1 midterm, and a final, each 30% of grade.

Scott is such a hysterical and fun teacher - I had him for 141 and just started with him on 143. Not really a difficult class, you may just have to study to increase your speed if you don't know something very well. SO FRIGGIN GREAT.

My favorite teacher this semester! I have a very trained theory background prior to this class but even material that was completely new to me was made crystal clear through Scott's teaching. He is very good at explaining things and is always willing to help students struggling. He is VERY kind. I'll be taking class with him for as long as I can!!!

Scott is a great guy and a skilled educator. That being said, I didn't really enjoy his class. When I learn music theory, things make a lot more sense when I can actually hear the intervals on an instrument. He barely played any of the pieces we analyzed in class. This is probably because you cover a lot of other material in the course. But still.

I love Scott! I had him for 141 and 142 and he is truly an amazing professor and person. He WANTS you to learn and so hes really willing to help you. He is very fair and work is not difficult. I have never skipped this class because he makes you want to go and learn!

Professor Smith is great, great guy. He really wants to help his students and wants them to learn something new. His class is quite easy, and the presentation he assigns isn't as bad as it sounds. I absolutely adored having Scott. Easy Easy A as long as you put forth a small bit of effort. Only allowed 2 absences but it's alright. He divided us into groups and we each presented a chapter, easy A, and it was 50% of the grade. He gives study guides before every test and makes the questions based off the study guides, not the book. TAKE HIM!!

Scott Zane Smith is absolutely amazing! Not only does he care about his students, but he tries his hardest to make sure you comprehend everything. He is so fabulous, and his class is so entertaining! Scott has all of the passion and talent anyone could ask for in a professor. He is light hearted and kind, but always pushes you to do better. His classes are the best I've ever taken. He should really be teaching Musical Theatre concentration classes. Take his class for learning a lot about music and yourself. You will have a lot of fun!

I will fight to the death for this man. He helps outside of class at any notice, organized, knowledgeable, clear in explanations, kind but firm, UNDERAPPRECIATED. He should be hired to teach Musical Theatre vocal classes. Everyone wants to take his class and most retake it. I've taken it 3 times already. You won't lose with this guy.
